American Open University Launches in Nigeria, Introduces Hybrid Learning Model with AI, Data Science and Industry Certifications

American Open University (A-Global), Nigeria, has officially commenced operations with the unveiling of its Global Campus in Ibadan, marking a notable development in Nigeria’s private higher education and digital learning space.
The launch event drew academics, regulators, industry representatives, and community leaders who gathered to witness the introduction of a university model designed to close the gap between academic degrees and workplace skills.
Speaking at the inauguration, the President and Founder, Dr. David Seyi Akanbi, said the institution was established to rethink how university education prepares students for real career outcomes in a technology-driven economy.
He explained that the university’s hybrid learning structure combines physical learning hubs with digital platforms and global partnerships to expand learning opportunities beyond traditional classroom limitations. According to him, collaborations with global technology companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Cisco are central to the institution’s approach to practical, skills-based education.
A keynote lecture delivered by Professor Francis O. Egbokhare of the University of Ibadan focused on what he described as an “Autarchic–Asymmetric Model” for Nigerian higher education. He argued that Nigeria’s education challenge is not a lack of infrastructure or talent but inefficient use of available resources.
He advocated a system where underutilised community spaces can function as learning centres supported by technology, allowing institutions to operate flexible, campus-light structures that reduce cost barriers while expanding access.
The event also featured goodwill messages from key stakeholders across regulatory, professional, and community institutions. Representatives from JAMB, the Cisco Networking Academy, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, and the Oyo State Police Command expressed support for the university’s model, particularly its emphasis on industry certification, digital skills, and workforce readiness.
Community leaders in Ibadan welcomed the university, describing it as a development expected to contribute to local growth and educational access.
American Open University announced that it has received approval from the National Universities Commission to run several undergraduate programmes structured around technology integration, digital strategy, and data-driven skills across disciplines.
Programmes in the College of Technology include Data Science, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, and Information Technology, with learning paths covering areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, ethical hacking, predictive analytics, and digital forensics.
In the School of Business and Management, available courses include Business Administration, Business Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Public Administration. These programmes integrate areas such as corporate finance, taxation, data analytics, IT project management, digital governance, and sustainable development.
The university stated that its admissions process is designed to identify applicants with clear career goals and digital readiness. Prospective students are required to submit a statement of purpose outlining their academic motivation and career direction. Applicants must also pass a digital skills assessment or complete a preparatory digital learning course before full enrolment.
Officials said the model is aimed at producing graduates equipped with both academic qualifications and globally recognised technology and professional certifications, positioning them for careers in high-growth sectors such as information technology, cybersecurity, data analytics, digital business, and public sector innovation.
With admissions now open, the institution says it is focused on building a learning environment where academic training aligns closely with industry expectations and the demands of Nigeria’s evolving digital economy.
