Akpabio Backs Creation of Specialised Universities Across Nigeria

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed strong support for legislative efforts aimed at expanding Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape through the creation of specialised universities tailored to specific national needs.
Akpabio made the statement during a public hearing held on Monday at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. The event was organised by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund to review several proposed bills for establishing new universities across the country.
Describing the bills as both “timely” and “strategic,” Akpabio emphasized the importance of building institutions focused on unique academic areas such as special needs education, geomatics, health sciences, technology, and vocational training.
Some of the proposed institutions include the Federal University of Education (Special), Oyo; Federal University of Health Sciences, Funtua, Katsina State; Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom; Federal University of Geomatics, Oyo; Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos; and the amended Federal University of Technology, Omoku, Rivers State.
According to the Senate President, the establishment of such institutions is necessary to align the country’s education system with the demands of a growing population and an increasingly knowledge-based global economy.
“Universities that focus on technology, health sciences, education, and vocational skills are vital to preparing a capable workforce that can drive innovation, provide essential services, and boost the nation’s economic development,” he said.
He added that these specialised universities reflect the Senate’s broader commitment to accessible, inclusive, and industry-aligned education that meets the evolving needs of society.
“These legislative proposals acknowledge the urgent need to bridge existing gaps in specialised education, foster innovation, and ensure regional equity in access to higher learning opportunities,” Akpabio noted.
He commended the Senate Committee, led by Senator Muntari Dandutse, for championing inclusive legislative processes and encouraging active stakeholder engagement.
“The establishment of these universities is not just about new structures; it’s about empowering minds, sparking innovation, and promoting national unity through equal educational access,” he added.
Akpabio also called for collective efforts by lawmakers, education stakeholders, and civil society to ensure the proposed institutions are well-resourced, properly managed, and responsive to the educational needs of modern learners.
