AFIT HOLDS ORIENTATION PROGRAMME FOR NEW STUDENTS

As part of the integration, enlightenment and familiarization process of newly admitted students into the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna, an orientation programme was conducted by the Institute on 10 January 2024 to acquaint the students with their new environment and guide them as they settle down for academic work.
Welcoming the students to the event, the Institute’s Director of Students Affairs Squadron Leader N Gana, congratulated all fresh students for their admission and urged them to obey the rules and regulations of the Institute. He further stated that the purpose of the orientation was to enable the students start on a strong footing, and to also acquaint them with their new environment.
The Guest Speaker, Professor O Achimugu, while delivering a lecture on ‘Setting off on a long but exciting journey’, tutored the 2023/2024 fresh students on the principles of a successful academic journey. According to her, ‘to embark on a successful and exciting academic journey in AFIT, students must come up with SMART goals”.
She explained that SMART was an acronym where S stands for Specific, meaning as a student, one should have a purpose; M for Measurable, meaning the number of As, Bs, Cs that a student wish to have to finish well; A for Achievable which relates to the sum total of lectures, tutorials, practical work among others that a student must participate actively in to achieve the set goal; R which stands for Relevant, connoting that students should only participate in those relevant activities that would enhance their academic well-being; and lastly T which stands for Time, signifying the need for efficient time management as a student.
Similarly, the Director of Quality Assurance, Associate Professor Ibrahim Yahuza, enlightened the students on AFIT grading and CGPA system adding that students must attain 80 per cent class attendance to qualify to write any examination in the Institute.


The new students were given lectures on AFIT Brief, AFIT Students Dress Code, dangers of drug abuse, behaviour change and adaptation and security tips. Other areas covered by the orientation programme were short talk on fraudulent acts and cybercrimes, health awareness, use of the library among others.
