WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TUTORIAL CLASSES (Advantages and disadvantages)
Tutorial is a class organized by students of higher level to teach the newly admitted and old students courses that may seems to be difficult to them. Sometimes tutorials can be organized by students of the same department and level to teach other students on some difficult courses. Tutorial class has helped a lot of students and at the same time weaken students academic performance. in this article, POLYTV will discuss what you need to know about tutorial classes, that is, the advantages and disadvantages of Tutorial Classes.
ADVANTAGES OF TUTORIAL CLASS
1. It expose students to understand what the lecturer teaches
Tutorial class help students to understand better what the lecturer teaches as the tutor can teach and explain better than the lecturer thus making learning easy for students. During my first year on campus tutorial class really helped me because I was able to learn and understand better through tutorial classes.
2. Teaching Approach and understanding
The method of teaching by tutors is different entirely from lecturers as Students can easily ask questions from their tutors and get answers to their own understanding in which they might find difficult to do when their lecturers is lecturing them. Many students are always afraid to ask questions from their lecturers even when they don’t understand maybe because they are trying to avoid embarrassment but in tutorial class, students can ask questions freely without fear of being bashed by the tutor.

3. FRIENDSHIP
Tutorials is also an opportunity where Undergraduate students can make friends and start relationship. From my research, 3 in 10 students that go for tutorials only do that to make friends. in tutorial class, you get to meet more students from different department and this alone can also affect your academic performance in the sense that your friends can also put you through some subjects and courses during or after the tutorial class.
4. Tutorials build students:
Yes tutorials help to build students academically, Tutorial has contribute to students academic performance in one way or the other and it keeps you busy and refreshes your brain. You can easily revised what your lecturer has taught you previously in tutorial class, also you learn more and more in tutorial classes and these prepare you ahead of your course mates in the same department. Students who attend tutorial classes often are tend to perform well academically than those who doesn’t thus builds students performance.

DISADVANTAGES OF TUTORIAL CLASSES
Disadvantages of TUTORIAL CLASSES are:
I) UNSERIOUSNESS
Tutorials sometimes are being organized to target female students and woo them. Some students in the ND2 or HND2 atimes organized tutorials just to pick and target female students. Tutorial class is one of the method that students politician use to gain popularity on campus. Tutorial class can lead to unseriousness because the students may ignore their lecturer’s class with the believe that their tutor will explain better.
II) CATCH THEM YOUNG
Fellowships and other clubs on campus hide under the guise of tutorials to lure students into their clubs, fellowships and association, the primary aim is to lure students especially the freshers to their fellowship or association and not really to teach students.
III) Different Teaching methods
Tutorials can cause confusion among students because it may get to a stage where the tutor explanation will be different from what the lecturer teaches hence exposing the students to failure. I remember when an ND2 student taught me fluid mechanics, the formula he gave me was different from what the lecturer taught us in class and that was how I missed 5marks. Tutorial classes is good but the different teaching method is one of the reason you shouldn’t attend tutorials.

IV) INCOMPETENT TUTORS
Tutors of Tutorial classes organized the class majorly to make money and fame. I wonder why a student who barely score 50 in his course will be taking tutorials. Some of the tutors are not competent enough to teach and they only did that just to make money.
v) DISTRCTION
Tutorial class is a distraction because you might not listen to the lecturer explanation in class with the believe that your tutor will explain to you better. You might also loose focus base on the distraction from the opposite sex as some students attend tutorial class to oppress and impress their colleague thereby distracting students from focusing on their studies.
In conclusion, Tutorial classes is good and has helped a lot of students to build their CGPA and also strengthen their academic performance in school. While tutorial classes is good, the disadvantages can also not be over emphasized, therefore you need to weigh the disadvantages to the advantages to know whether or not to attend tutorial class.
