Sterling Bank Expands N2bn Scholarship Scheme with Paid Internships and Job Offers

Sterling Bank Plc has taken a bold step toward investing in Nigeria’s future by enhancing its Beyond Education initiative. The bank is offering guaranteed job placements and paid internship opportunities to selected recipients of its recently announced ₦2 billion scholarship programme.

This development marks a significant shift in how corporate organizations engage with youth development. The initiative, originally designed to fund scholarships for 600 Nigerian students, has now evolved into a pipeline for talent development. According to a statement from the bank, the move is aimed at equipping young Nigerians with practical work experience in key sectors such as banking, technology, customer service, and risk management.

Speaking on the programme, Sterling Bank CEO, Abubakar Suleiman, highlighted the bank’s commitment to national growth through human capital development. “Nigeria’s greatest asset is its people. Our role as an institution is to empower them to lead, innovate, and solve problems. This initiative serves as a platform to prepare the next generation of builders,” he said.

The scholarship programme is part of Sterling Bank’s broader retail strategy, which focuses on real-world impact. In April, the bank became the first in Nigeria to eliminate transfer fees for individual customers—helping users save over ₦600 million in just three months. Additionally, the bank’s AlwaysOn initiative offers eligible customers immediate access to ₦1 million in cash advances, providing a much-needed financial cushion.

Suleiman also encouraged other companies to participate in shaping Nigeria’s workforce by providing similar opportunities for scholarship beneficiaries. “This is a chance for industry leaders to collaborate in building a stronger and more inclusive economy,” he added.

Interns under this programme will receive competitive stipends, undergo formal training, and have the chance to work closely with experienced professionals within the bank.

The Beyond Education initiative aligns with Sterling Bank’s HEART strategy—an acronym for Health, Education, Agriculture, Renewable Energy, and Transportation. Through this strategy, the bank has rolled out impactful projects such as smart health booths, digital learning upgrades in public schools, agricultural support schemes, rural energy access, and electric transport solutions. These efforts have positively impacted over 30 million Nigerians.

Launched on Democracy Day, the scholarship selection process spans all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Nominees are chosen transparently, with input from community leaders and bank customers.

Sterling Bank continues to redefine the role of financial institutions in national development by prioritizing education, innovation, and inclusive growth.
