Requirements for NYSC registration in Nigeria
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a scheme established by the Nigerian government to foster unity and national development. Every Nigerian graduate below the age of 30 is required to participate, except for those exempted due to age or other specified reasons. The registration process is an essential step for prospective corps members, and understanding what is required will help ensure a smooth experience.
To begin with, prospective corps members must have graduated from a recognized institution, either in Nigeria or abroad. Nigerian graduates are expected to obtain their certificates from institutions accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), or other relevant bodies. Foreign-trained graduates, on the other hand, must ensure that their certificates are valid and recognized by the Federal Ministry of Education.
The online registration process requires an active email address and a functional phone number. These details will be used for correspondence throughout the process. It is important to provide accurate information to avoid complications. During registration, the date of birth and other personal details must match those on official documents, as discrepancies may lead to disqualification.
For Nigerian-trained graduates, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) admission letter and statement of result or certificate from their institution are mandatory. Those whose names are not listed on the Senate-approved list from their institution will not be able to proceed with registration. It is advisable to confirm name inclusion on the Senate list before attempting to register.
Foreign-trained graduates are required to provide additional documents such as an international passport, original certificate or transcript, and an evaluation letter from the Federal Ministry of Education. This evaluation ensures that their foreign qualifications are equivalent to those awarded by Nigerian institutions. Furthermore, those who studied in non-English speaking countries must provide a translated version of their certificates and transcripts.
During registration, biometric verification is mandatory. Each prospective corps member is expected to undergo thumbprint verification. Those who encounter fingerprint issues must visit the NYSC headquarters or designated centers for further assistance. The biometric verification system helps to prevent impersonation and ensures authenticity.
Another important aspect is the provision of a passport photograph taken on a white background. The photograph must be recent and clear. Poor-quality images or those with colored backgrounds may result in rejection. The right specifications must be followed to ensure compliance with NYSC requirements.
Married women who wish to be posted to a location close to their spouse are required to upload supporting documents such as a marriage certificate, newspaper publication of the change of name, and proof of their husband’s residence. Nursing mothers may also be required to provide additional evidence to support their request.
Medical fitness is another requirement. A medical fitness certificate from a government hospital or an NYSC-accredited private hospital is necessary. This document confirms that the prospective corps member is physically fit to participate in the service year. Those with serious health conditions may apply for relocation or exemption based on medical grounds, but they must provide valid medical reports to support their claims.
For those seeking exemption from service, documents such as birth certificates, degree certificates, and other supporting documents must be provided. Those above 30 years at the time of graduation or those who have served in the armed forces for more than nine months are eligible for exemption. Those with national honors may also be exempted from service.

Upon successful registration, prospective corps members will receive their call-up letters, which contain their state of deployment and reporting date. It is important to print the call-up letter and report to the designated orientation camp as instructed. Failure to report within the stipulated time may result in rescheduling or forfeiture of service.
All prospective corps members are advised to follow updates on the NYSC portal regularly. Sometimes, there may be changes in requirements or additional instructions that must be adhered to. Any errors during registration must be corrected promptly to avoid complications during mobilization.
