OpenAI Establishes Africa’s First Artificial Intelligence Academy at UNILAG

In a landmark move for Africa’s technology and education sectors, OpenAI has chosen the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as the home of its first-ever Artificial Intelligence (AI) Academy on the continent. This strategic decision positions UNILAG as a major hub for AI research, innovation, and global collaboration in Africa.
The announcement was made during the opening ceremony of UNILAG’s 2025 International Week, themed “Equitable Partnerships and the Future of AI in Africa,” which gathered global experts, innovators, policymakers, and academics to discuss the future of artificial intelligence and its impact on sustainable development across the continent.
UNILAG Strengthens Its Global Standing in AI Innovation
Speaking at the event, Professor Afolabi Lesi, UNILAG’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), emphasized that the institution’s goal extends beyond discussions — it is focused on achieving measurable results that directly benefit students, researchers, and local communities.
“At UNILAG, research, industry collaboration, and artificial intelligence come together with purpose and ethics,” Lesi said. “Our partnerships are built on co-design and shared standards. We ensure that technology adapts to people and communities — not the other way around.”
He further explained that UNILAG’s multidisciplinary model, where engineers work with linguists and clinicians collaborate with social scientists, allows innovation to respond to real human challenges.
Africa Must Lead, Not Follow, in the AI Revolution
In her keynote address, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, UNILAG’s Vice-Chancellor, urged African institutions to transition from being passive consumers of technology to becoming creators and drivers of innovation.
“Artificial Intelligence is not a distant future—it is today’s reality,” Ogunsola stated. “For Africa, AI offers the opportunity to overcome limitations and redefine education, healthcare, and industry. But to make AI work for us, partnerships must be equitable and built on shared growth and respect.”
She highlighted several ongoing research initiatives at UNILAG, including projects in health innovation, nuclear engineering, and medicinal plant studies, as evidence of the university’s commitment to developing technology-driven solutions tailored for African societies.
“The future of AI isn’t limited to Silicon Valley,” she added. “It lives in Lagos, Nairobi, Kigali, Accra, Cairo, and Johannesburg — in the minds of young Africans who dare to dream, build, and lead.”
OpenAI Launches Its First African AI Academy
The highlight of the event came when Emmanuel Lubanzadio, OpenAI’s Africa Lead, officially announced the launch of the OpenAI Academy at UNILAG. This marks the company’s first AI academy in Africa and one of its most ambitious global education initiatives.
Lubanzadio said OpenAI’s decision was driven by UNILAG’s growing reputation for excellence in technology and research, as well as its dedication to inclusive development.
“AI can be a great equalizer, and that’s why OpenAI is focused on access for all,” he said. “The UNILAG Academy will nurture African talent and ensure that innovation is distributed fairly across communities. We want to democratize access to technology, not centralize it.”
The announcement was met with resounding applause from students, researchers, and industry leaders, who recognized the project as a milestone for Nigeria and the wider African innovation ecosystem.
Nigerian Government Commends UNILAG’s Role in National AI Strategy
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, praised UNILAG for its leadership in shaping the nation’s AI landscape. Represented by Dr. Olubunmi Ajala, Director of the National Centre for AI & Robotics, the minister described artificial intelligence as a “transformational tool” capable of reducing inequality and driving national growth.
He revealed that the Federal Government has launched a national fibre optic project to connect all 774 local government areas with high-speed internet, ensuring that digital inclusion and innovation reach every Nigerian.
“Access to innovation must not be limited by geography or status,” Tijani stated. “Our goal is to democratize technology and empower every Nigerian to create value in the digital economy.”
Private Sector Applauds UNILAG’s Academic Excellence
Adding a corporate perspective, Yvonne Ike, Managing Director and Head of Sub-Saharan Africa at Bank of America, commended UNILAG for producing exceptional graduates who compete globally.
“I don’t know what’s in the water here, but UNILAG’s graduates consistently shine on the world stage,” Ike said. “When they meet peers from Cambridge or Harvard, they hold their own—confident, competent, and world-class.”
She emphasized that Africa’s greatest strength in the AI era lies in its human capital, not just in technology. “Our future depends on who builds and benefits from AI — that’s why empowering young Africans is essential,” she concluded.
A New Era for AI Education in Africa
The establishment of the OpenAI Academy at UNILAG represents a major investment in the future of AI education, digital transformation, and human capacity development in Africa.
By providing advanced training, mentorship, and research opportunities, the academy aims to produce a new generation of AI engineers, data scientists, and machine learning experts capable of solving Africa’s most pressing challenges — from healthcare and agriculture to climate change and financial inclusion.
Industry observers believe this collaboration could open the door to foreign direct investment (FDI), drive AI-based startups, and position Nigeria as a continental leader in digital innovation.
As AI continues to redefine global industries, the OpenAI Academy at UNILAG is expected to serve as a model for similar initiatives across Africa, connecting education with enterprise and driving long-term sustainable growth.
