OPay Extends N1.2 Billion Scholarship Fund to State University

In a bold move to strengthen its commitment to education and youth empowerment, OPay Digital Services has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), officially extending its N1.2 billion, 10-year nationwide scholarship fund to students of the institution.
The signing ceremony, which took place at the NSUK Council Chamber, was attended by top representatives from both parties. Speaking on behalf of OPay, the Chief Security Officer, Dr. James Vandefan, highlighted the company’s dedication to bridging financial gaps in education and investing in the future of Nigerian students.
“Education remains one of the most powerful tools for empowerment. Through this scholarship, OPay is supporting brilliant but financially challenged students across Nigeria. Our partnership with NSUK reflects our belief in knowledge-sharing and societal growth,” Dr. Vandefan said.
He further noted that as an alumnus of NSUK, he takes pride in supporting his alma mater. According to him, the university’s resilience, affordable tuition, and efficient academic structure make it one of Nigeria’s most impactful institutions. He emphasized that the partnership would not only provide scholarships but also foster long-term initiatives in research, mentorship, and community development.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Maikano Muhammad Ari, applauded OPay for its vision and support. He assured that the scholarships would be directed towards indigent but deserving students and expressed optimism about future collaborations between the university and OPay.
Also speaking at the event, OPay’s Head of CSR, Itoro Udo, explained that the partnership would extend beyond scholarships. According to him, OPay plans to introduce additional initiatives such as cybersecurity awareness campaigns, student mentorship programs, facility upgrades, and joint research opportunities.
As part of the agreement, OPay presented a cheque of N60 million to the university management, representing its immediate investment in the scholarship program. The fund will provide financial relief to selected students, while upcoming phases of the partnership are expected to create wider opportunities in knowledge-sharing and career development.
The N1.2 billion scholarship initiative is part of OPay’s 10-year commitment to education across Nigerian tertiary institutions. The program is already operational in other universities, making NSUK the 15th institution to benefit.
