Money Tree Loan App Review: Hidden Charges, Fake Offers and Debt Harassment Exposed

Online loan apps have become a popular source of quick cash in Nigeria. However, while some are genuinely helpful, others use deceptive tactics to trap unsuspecting borrowers. One of the controversial names currently trending is Money Tree Loan App. Many Nigerians have shared disturbing experiences with this platform — from false offers to harassment and intimidation.
So, is Money Tree Loan App legit or a scam? Should you apply or stay far away? This review exposes how Money Tree operates, their loan interest rates, repayment policies, customer experiences, and why you should be extremely careful before accepting any offer.
1. My Personal Experience With Money Tree Loan App
I received a call from someone claiming to be Money Tree staff. He said they checked my credit history and found that I was eligible for a ₦50,000 loan for 30 days, and I would only be required to pay back ₦60,000.
It sounded fair compared to most loan apps.

He even sent a message on WhatsApp with all the details. To access the offer, he asked me to install Money Tree Loan App, register, and apply for any loan inside the app so that he could “internally upgrade” it to ₦50k.
However, after registering, I realized that the only available offer on the app was ₦13,000 for 7 days, with a repayment amount of ₦20,000.
I complained to the staff guy. He insisted I should apply first, promising that the ₦50k upgrade would reflect instantly. I trusted him and applied.
But guess what?
I received ₦13,000 instead of ₦50,000.
When I confronted him, he claimed “the upgrade driver was down” and that it would be fixed in one hour. From one hour, it became “check back in the evening”, then “tomorrow morning”.
At that point, I asked to return the money immediately and cancel the loan.
To my shock, he threatened me, saying I must still pay back the full ₦20,000 even if I refunded instantly.
That was when I realized it was a trap.
2. How Money Tree Loan App Tricks Users
From this experience and multiple online complaints, it is clear that Money Tree targets unsuspecting borrowers with fake promises.
Here’s how their alleged tactics work:
| Strategy | How They Use It |
|---|---|
| Fake Calls & Promotions | They claim you’re “pre-approved” for a high loan amount. |
| Upgrade Scam | They tell you to apply for a smaller loan so they can “upgrade” it internally. |
| Sudden Excuses | After disbursing the lower amount, they blame “system error” or “network upgrade failure.” |
| Threats on Refund | Even if you offer to return the money, they force you to repay with interest. |
| Psychological Pressure | They delay responses to keep you stuck in debt. |
3. Interest Rates – Extremely High and Unfair
Their ads may sound attractive but in reality, Money Tree charges ridiculously high interest rates.
Let’s calculate based on the common offer:
Loan Amount: ₦13,000
Repayment: ₦20,000
Duration: 7 days
Interest Rate Calculation:
₦20,000 – ₦13,000 = ₦7,000 interest
₦7,000 / ₦13,000 = 0.53 (53% interest in 7 days!)
If converted to one month, this could be over 200% interest, which is pure loan shark behavior.
4. What Happens If You Miss Repayment?
This is where things get ugly. Based on multiple testimonies from users:
They call your phone repeatedly, sometimes over 20 times a day.
They send threatening messages.
They call your contacts, including your family members, boss, or co-workers.
They accuse you of fraud or theft, even when you’re willing to pay.
Some borrowers even reported public shaming on WhatsApp groups and SMS broadcasts.
This aggressive debt collection method is unprofessional, illegal, and traumatic.
5. Is Money Tree Loan App Registered or Licensed by CBN?
There is no verified record showing that Money Tree Loan App operates under any CBN-approved lending license. Most registered financial institutions in Nigeria are listed under:
FCCPC (Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission)
CBN Licensed Finance Institutions Database
But Money Tree does not appear in any official directory, which makes it a high-risk platform.
6. Pros and Cons of Money Tree Loan App
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Fast loan disbursement | Extremely high interest rates |
| No collateral required | False promises and upgrade scams |
| Easy registration | Threats and harassment upon default |
| Available on Google Play | No visible regulatory license |
7. Should You Borrow from Money Tree Loan App?
No – unless you are fully prepared for the stress that comes with it.
From fake offers to frightening debt recovery tactics, Money Tree operates more like a loan trap than a financial solution.
Better Alternatives
If you urgently need a loan, try more reputable and regulated platforms, such as:
Branch Loan App
FairMoney
Carbon
Palmpay Loan (Flexi Cash)
Renmoney
These apps still charge interest, but they do not harass or disgrace borrowers like loan sharks.
Final Verdict – Money Tree Loan App is High Risk
Money Tree Loan App may look like a quick fix, but beneath the surface lies deceptive marketing, exploitative interest rates, and emotional harassment.
Their strategy is simple:
“Promise big, deliver small, then force repayment with threats.”
If you value your peace of mind, stay away. No emergency is worth your mental health, public embarrassment, or damaged relationships.
