Makinde Challenges Oyo Poly to Develop Alternative Energy as 3,650 Students Graduate

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged The Polytechnic, Ibadan, to research and develop a solution to the institution’s power challenges. He made this call on Friday during the school’s 39th convocation ceremony, where 3,650 students graduated.
The graduates included 1,669 from the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies, 571 from Science, 574 from Engineering, 333 from Environmental Studies, and 503 from Financial Studies.
Represented by the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Salihu Adelabu, Makinde congratulated the graduates and expressed optimism about the number of engineering students completing their studies.
Acting Rector Taiwo Lasisi praised the graduates for their academic achievements and character, urging them to contribute to nation-building. He also highlighted key challenges affecting the institution, including financial constraints, inadequate infrastructure, and high energy costs.
In response to the power concerns, Adelabu expressed surprise that a technical institution had yet to develop an alternative energy source. Speaking on behalf of the governor, he tasked the polytechnic with conducting research to address the issue.
The event also featured awards for outstanding graduates, with Shonde Idayat from the Faculty of Science emerging as the overall best student.
