Is It Normal to Smell Myself Through My Pants? Causes and Treatment

Noticing a strong body odor — especially when you can smell it through your clothes — can be uncomfortable and sometimes concerning. While mild odor is normal after exercise or before showering, persistent or unpleasant smells may indicate an infection or another health condition.

This article covers the most common causes of unusual groin odor in both men and women, how to manage it, and when to seek medical advice.

Causes of Strong General Odor

Diet and Food Choices
Certain foods can temporarily change how your body smells. Strong-smelling foods that may affect sweat, urine, or vaginal odor include:

  • Garlic and onions
  • Asparagus
  • Spicy foods like chili
  • Vinegar and fermented products
  • Marinated fish

Sweating
Sweat in the groin area can trap bacteria and fungi, leading to odor. Showering after workouts, sex, or other activities helps reduce the smell. Wearing breathable cotton underwear and avoiding tight clothes also helps.

Medication Side Effects
Some medications can increase sweating and body odor. Examples include:

  • Duloxetine (Cymbalta)
  • Escitalopram (Lexapro)
  • Paroxetine (Paxil)
  • Sertraline (Zoloft)

Incontinence
Urine leakage may soak into underwear and skin, causing a lingering smell. Good hygiene, frequent washing, and changing into clean clothes promptly can reduce odor.

Yeast Infections
A yeast infection may cause a bread-like smell, itching, redness, and irritation. Common yeast infection remedies include antifungal creams or oral antifungal medication. Recurrent yeast infections should be checked by a healthcare provider.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
A UTI can cause strong odor along with:

  • Painful urination
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Lower abdominal or side pain
  • Nausea

Antibiotics prescribed by a doctor are the only effective UTI treatment.

Causes of Vaginal Odor

Forgotten or Retained Tampon
A tampon left inside the vagina for too long can cause foul-smelling discharge, swelling, pain, and fever. It should be removed immediately to avoid toxic shock syndrome.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
BV is one of the most common causes of vaginal odor. Symptoms include:

  • Strong “fishy” odor
  • Gray or white discharge
  • Itching and burning

BV usually requires bacterial vaginosis treatment with prescription antibiotics.

Trichomoniasis (Trich)
This STI often causes a fishy smell, frothy pink or yellow discharge, and pain during urination. It can be treated with prescription medication such as metronidazole.

Hormonal Changes
During menopause, reduced estrogen can alter vaginal pH and lead to unusual smells. Hormone therapy may help manage menopause-related vaginal odor.

Rectovaginal Fistula
This rare condition occurs when an opening forms between the vagina and rectum, allowing stool or gas to pass into the vaginal canal. It may require surgery for correction.

Causes of Penile Odor

Smegma
A buildup of skin cells, oils, and moisture under the foreskin can cause odor. Proper hygiene — gently washing with warm water and mild soap — usually resolves it.

Balanitis
This condition causes swelling, pain, and foul-smelling discharge from the penis. It can result from poor hygiene, infections, or irritation. Treatment depends on the cause and may involve antifungal creams, antibiotics, or anti-inflammatory medication.

When to See a Doctor

Smelling yourself through your pants is not always a medical emergency, but it should not be ignored if it continues after good hygiene. Contact a healthcare provider if you experience:

  • Strong vaginal odor with discharge
  • Persistent penile odor despite washing
  • Fever above 101.5°F (38.6°C)
  • Painful urination
  • Odor or discharge during pregnancy
Occasional body odor is normal, but a strong or persistent smell in the groin may signal infections like yeast infection, BV, trichomoniasis, or UTI. Good hygiene, breathable clothing, and prompt medical treatment are the best ways to manage odor and protect your sexual health.
