Ireland Opens Applications for 2026 Fully Funded Scholarships for International Students

The Government of Ireland has officially announced the opening of applications for its 2026 International Education Scholarships, one of Europe’s most competitive and generous study abroad opportunities.
Administered by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, the programme provides a fully funded pathway for outstanding international students to pursue Master’s and PhD degrees at leading Irish universities.
Eligibility and Duration
The scholarships are open to applicants from non-EU/EEA countries. Funding is available for:
- Master’s by Research: two years of support.
- Doctoral (PhD) degrees: four years of support.
Applicants must hold a relevant Bachelor’s degree to apply for a Master’s, or a Master’s degree to qualify for PhD studies. Provisional certificates are accepted for those awaiting final results.
There are no age restrictions, but applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency and secure a confirmed supervisor at an Irish higher education institution. Applications must be submitted online before October 23, 2025.
Participating Institutions
The scheme covers a wide range of universities and specialist institutions in Ireland, including:
- Trinity College Dublin
- University College Dublin
- University of Galway
- University of Limerick
- Dublin City University
- Maynooth University
- University College Cork
- Munster Technological University
- Atlantic Technological University
- Technological University Dublin
Specialist institutions such as the Royal Irish Academy, the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences are also part of the programme.
Financial Benefits
The scholarships are valued at over €33,000 per year, making them one of the most comprehensive funding opportunities available to international students. Benefits include:
- Annual stipend of €25,000 for living expenses.
- Tuition fee coverage of up to €5,750 per year, including non-EU fees.
- Annual research expenses of €3,250 for direct research costs.
Academic and Research Fields
The programme spans a wide range of disciplines, covering Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), as well as social sciences, arts, and humanities.
Research areas include:
- Biological Sciences (genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, ecology)
- Chemistry (organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry)
- Computer Science (artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, machine learning)
- Earth and Environmental Sciences (climate change, sustainability, geology)
- Engineering (civil, biomedical, electrical, and chemical engineering)
- Mathematics (statistics, pure and applied mathematics, computational modelling)
- Physics (quantum mechanics, materials physics, theoretical and experimental physics)
According to the Irish government, this initiative strengthens Ireland’s role as a global hub for higher education while promoting international collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Application Process
Interested candidates must:
- Review the official call for applications and eligibility criteria.
- Secure a supervisor at a participating Irish institution.
- Complete the online application form before October 23, 2025.
Applicants must also pass a preliminary eligibility quiz before accessing the main form and provide official academic transcripts endorsed by their host institution.
