How Much Does a Canada Student Visa Cost Right Now?

Canada remains one of the most attractive destinations for Nigerian students seeking quality education, affordable tuition compared to some other Western countries, and the chance to work while studying. Every year, thousands of Nigerians apply for study permits, which are the official visas that allow international students to study in Canada.
One of the most common questions prospective students ask is about the cost of obtaining a Canadian student visa. Beyond tuition fees, it is important to budget properly for visa charges, biometric fees, medical tests, and other related expenses. Knowing the full cost will help you prepare adequately and avoid unnecessary surprises during the application process.
1. Application Fee for Canada Student Visa
The official application fee for a Canadian student visa, also known as a study permit, is 150 Canadian dollars (CAD). At the current exchange rate, this is around ₦140,000 to ₦160,000, depending on fluctuations in the naira against the Canadian dollar.
This fee must be paid online when submitting your application through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal. Payment can be made using a debit or credit card that supports international transactions.
2. Biometric Fee
In addition to the application fee, applicants from Nigeria must also pay a biometric fee of 85 CAD. This fee covers the cost of collecting fingerprints and photographs at a Visa Application Centre (VAC). Therefore, the combined basic fee for a Canadian student visa is 235 CAD, which equals about ₦220,000 to ₦250,000, depending on the current exchange rate.
3. Medical Examination Cost
All Nigerian students applying for a Canadian student visa are required to undergo a medical examination at a panel clinic approved by the Canadian government. The cost of medicals in Nigeria ranges from ₦50,000 to ₦70,000 depending on the clinic. The tests typically include chest X-rays, blood tests, urine tests, and general health checks. It is advisable to complete the medical exam early because delays in getting results can affect the processing of your visa.
4. Police Clearance Certificate
A police character certificate may be requested as part of your study permit application to prove you do not have a criminal record. In Nigeria, the cost of obtaining this certificate is usually around ₦10,000 to ₦20,000, depending on the issuing office.
5. Passport Issuance or Renewal Cost
If your passport is expired or close to expiry, you must renew it before applying for a visa. A standard Nigerian passport costs around ₦35,000 to ₦45,000, depending on the number of pages (32 or 64 pages). Since Canada requires your passport to be valid for the entire period of your intended stay, it is important to renew it early if necessary.
6. Proof of Funds Requirement
Although not an official fee, the proof of funds requirement is one of the most important financial aspects of the application.
The Canadian government requires Nigerian students to show that they have at least 10,000 CAD per year (about ₦9.5 million to ₦10 million) for living expenses, in addition to tuition fees.
If your tuition is 15,000 CAD per year (about ₦14.5 million to ₦15 million), you must show proof of at least 25,000 CAD (around ₦23 million to ₦25 million) in your bank account or through a sponsor’s financial documents.
7. Other Possible Expenses
- Service charges at Visa Application Centres: VACs in Lagos and Abuja may charge additional service fees of around ₦10,000 to ₦15,000.
- Travel insurance: While not always compulsory, it is advisable to budget ₦20,000 to ₦40,000 for student travel insurance.
- Courier services: If you want your passport delivered to you after visa stamping, courier charges may apply.
8. Total Estimated Cost of Applying
To give a clear picture, here’s an estimate of the total cost for a Nigerian student applying for a Canadian study permit right now:
- Application fee: ₦140,000 – ₦160,000
- Biometric fee: ₦70,000 – ₦90,000
- Medical examination: ₦50,000 – ₦70,000
- Police certificate: ₦10,000 – ₦20,000
- Passport renewal (if needed): ₦35,000 – ₦45,000
- VAC service fee: ₦10,000 – ₦15,000
Total (excluding tuition and proof of funds): ₦315,000 – ₦400,000
This estimate shows that while the official visa and biometric fee is about 235 CAD, the total cost in Nigeria is higher due to medicals, police clearance, and other related expenses.
9. How to Pay the Fees
The visa and biometric fees are paid online through the official IRCC website using a card that supports international transactions. After payment, receipts should be printed and kept safely, as they will be required at different stages of your application. Medical fees, police certificates, and VAC charges are paid directly to the respective organizations in Nigeria.
10. Tips for Successful Application
- Start your application at least 6 months before your program begins to avoid last-minute delays.
- Ensure your proof of funds is clear, traceable, and meets Canadian immigration standards. Sudden large deposits in your bank account may raise questions.
- Always use the official IRCC portal and avoid unauthorized agents who promise guaranteed visas.
- Keep copies of all payment receipts for your records.
