FG Opens PTDF Scholarship 2026: How to Apply, Requirements and Benefits for Nigerian Students

The Federal Government has officially opened applications for the 2025/2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund in-country scholarship scheme, targeting Nigerian students pursuing engineering and other energy-related disciplines.

The scholarship portal went live on April 20, 2026, and interested applicants have until May 29, 2026, to complete and submit their applications through the official PTDF platform.

The programme is designed for both undergraduate and postgraduate students in Nigerian universities, with a strong focus on courses linked to the oil and gas sector. It forms part of ongoing efforts to develop local expertise, reduce reliance on foreign professionals, and strengthen Nigeria’s technical workforce in the energy industry.

Eligible candidates are required to complete their applications within the six-week window by registering on the PTDF scholarship portal and following the outlined process carefully.

Applicants must begin by creating an account with valid personal details, after which they will receive login credentials via email. Once logged in, candidates are required to verify their National Identification Number before proceeding. The PTDF advises applicants to avoid repeated verification attempts in case of failure and instead seek assistance through official support channels.

Before accessing the application form, candidates must accept the programme’s terms and conditions. Failure to agree to these terms will automatically disqualify the application.

Applicants are expected to fill out the form accurately, ensuring all required information is properly entered. They must also select their preferred course of study and institutions, with options for first, second, and third choices.

For postgraduate applicants, additional requirements include uploading a statement of purpose for master’s degree programmes or a detailed research proposal for PhD candidates.

Mandatory documents for all applicants include academic certificates, birth certificate, and proof of local government identification. All uploaded files must meet specified requirements, typically in PDF format and within the allowed size limits.

Candidates may also include additional credentials such as professional memberships or academic publications where applicable, although there are limits on the number of uploads permitted.

Before final submission, applicants are advised to carefully review their entries, as submitted applications cannot be edited afterward. Accuracy and completeness are critical to avoid disqualification.

The PTDF in-country scholarship scheme provides financial support covering tuition fees, stipends, and essential learning resources for selected candidates. Beneficiaries are chosen based on academic merit and the relevance of their chosen fields to Nigeria’s development priorities.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen human capital development within the energy sector and enhance the employability of Nigerian graduates in high-demand technical fields.

The in-country scholarship programme is distinct from PTDF’s overseas scholarship scheme, focusing specifically on supporting education within Nigeria’s tertiary institutions while building a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals for the nation’s oil and gas industry.
