Federal Government Secures $700,000 ECOWAS Renewable Energy Grant for Schools Solar Power Infrastructure

Nigeria has secured a $700,000 grant to electrify public health centres and educational institutions under a regional clean energy programme aimed at expanding off-grid electricity access across West Africa.

The funding was obtained by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) from the ECOWAS Commission, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding under the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project. The initiative will support the deployment of solar photovoltaic systems to 15 public institutions across the Federal Capital Territory, Niger State, and Nasarawa State.

Solar Power Expansion for Critical Public Institutions

Under the agreement, the grant will finance the installation of standalone solar power systems in selected rural schools and healthcare facilities. In addition to the regional agreement, the REA signed a separate Memorandum of Understanding with the Niger State Government to enable state-level collaboration and counterpart funding for selected sites within the state.

A dedicated Project Implementation Unit will be created within the REA, working alongside the regional project team and steering committee.
