Apply Now: Federal Government Fully Funded Overseas Scholarship for Nigerians 2026 (Application Portal and Requirements)

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially opened applications for the 2026 Fully Funded Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship for Nigerian graduates seeking to pursue Master’s and PhD degrees abroad. The scholarship is administered by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund as part of its mandate to strengthen Nigeria’s oil and gas sector through advanced education, research, and global exposure.
The 2026 overseas postgraduate scholarship provides successful applicants with the opportunity to study in selected universities located in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia. The programme is designed to equip Nigerian professionals with specialised knowledge, modern research skills, and international best practices that align with national development priorities.
According to information released by the fund, applicants will only be permitted to study approved courses at designated partner universities. This restriction is aimed at maintaining quality assurance and ensuring that all sponsored programmes remain relevant to Nigeria’s energy and petroleum industry needs.
The scholarship package is fully funded and covers return flight tickets, full tuition fees, health insurance, accommodation support, living allowances, and bench fees where applicable. Beneficiaries are also provided with other approved academic and welfare support throughout the duration of their studies.
For the 2026 academic session, applications are strictly limited to PTDF partner institutions with established collaboration agreements. Interested candidates are required to submit their applications through the official PTDF scholarship portal and select only programmes that have received formal approval under the scheme. Courses outside the oil and gas value chain or unrelated disciplines will not be considered.
As part of efforts to strengthen local research capacity, PhD scholarships in the United Kingdom will be offered exclusively on a split-site basis. Under this arrangement, doctoral candidates will conduct part of their research at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Kaduna, while completing the remaining portion at selected partner universities in the UK. This model is intended to enhance knowledge transfer, build institutional capacity, and position the college as a leading postgraduate and research hub in Africa.
The overseas postgraduate scholarship is highly competitive, and selection is based strictly on merit. After the initial screening of applications, shortlisted candidates from each state will be invited for interviews conducted by a selection panel. Evaluation criteria include academic performance, professional qualifications, relevance of the proposed course or research to the oil and gas industry, and demonstrated leadership potential.
For PhD applicants, additional assessment will focus on the quality of submitted research proposals, previous publications, and the applicant’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to industry-focused research. Membership of relevant professional bodies may also provide an added advantage during the selection process.
Applicants for MSc programmes must possess a minimum of a Second Class Upper degree or a Second Class Lower degree with relevant industry experience. PhD applicants must hold at least a Second Class Lower degree along with a strong postgraduate qualification. Completion of the National Youth Service Corps programme, computer literacy, and possession of a valid National Identity Number are mandatory for all applicants.
Candidates are required to upload clear and verifiable copies of academic certificates, transcripts, NYSC discharge certificates, O’Level results including English and Mathematics, and other supporting documents during the online application process. Any form of multiple applications, submission of falsified documents, or selection of non-approved programmes will result in automatic disqualification.
The deadline for submission of applications for the 2026 Fully Funded Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship is 27 February 2026. Interested Nigerian graduates are advised to apply early and ensure that all information provided is accurate and complete.
This scholarship represents a significant opportunity for Nigerians seeking fully funded international education, postgraduate funding, and career advancement in the oil and gas sector while contributing to Nigeria’s long-term economic growth.
