Everything You Need to Know About The Polytechnic Ibadan (Poly Ibadan)
BRIEF HISTORY
The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State, was established on August 7th, 1970 as a successor to the erstwhile Technical College, Ibadan, under the provisions of a Principal Edit in 1970. This Edict has undergone several amendments in order to make the Polytechnic relevant to the present day needs of Oyo State, the proprietor in particular, Nigeria, and the world at large.
The institution was established to provide an alternative higher education to universities, particularly in technical skill acquisition.
The Polytechnic is one of the giant technical institutions in Nigeria with the highest number of UTME applicants every year. Since its establishment, POLY IBADAN has produced thousands of graduates and entrepreneurs. In fact, many of your favourite celebrities and politicians graduated from Ibadan Polytechnic. Atolagbe, Tope Alabi, Mercy Aigbe, Ex-Governor Aregbesola, Toyin Aimakhu, Segun Odegbami, and Otunba Gbenga Daniel (Former Ogun State governor), among others, are Ibadan Polytechnic graduates, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Poly Ibadan is a great citadel of learning.

THE POLYTECHNIC COMMUNITY.
POLY IBADAN is hosted along Eleyele Road in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State. The community is dominated mostly by the Yoruba tribe and other tribes with both the Muslim and Christian religions. The crime rate in the polytechnic community is minimal, although sometimes there are reports of insecurity, but I believe no city is crime free. Hence, the polytechnic community is peaceful and very adaptive. Even if you are a stranger, you will adapt to the environment so fast. The common businesses in the polytechnic community are commercial businesses such as trades, eateries, car washes, POS, Okada, hotels, boutiques, cyber cafes etc. Ibadan is a large city that accommodates a lot of business.
POLY IBADAN CAMPUSES.
Ibadan Poly has two campuses, which are the northern campus and the southern campus. The Southern Campus is for the Faculty of Engineering only. The northern campus is for all other faculties and departments. Popular buildings in the polytechnic campuses include the central administration building, the 1000-seater hall, and others.
Ibadan Polytechnic releases semester results both on noticeboard and online. For now, Poly Ibadan does not have a portal to check students’ academic performance yet as results are being released on notice boards at the end of the semester.
Some of the departments with the highest number of students are Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), Business Administration, and Mass Communication.

1. FULL-TIME PROGRAMME: This is a programme for students who were admitted through JAMB and also passed the school’s post-UTME exams. A full-time programme is available for both ND and HND. Lectures start at 8:00 am in the morning. The duration of this programme is 2 years.

2. PART-TIME PROGRAMME: This is a direct-entry programme for students who would like to combine studies with work, as lectures are held on weekdays. The duration for this program is 2 years of 6 semesters. HND part-time graduates are not eligible to serve(NYSC) but will be issued a NYSC exemption certificate. The lectures are held mostly on weekends, and the school fees are costly compared to other programmes. You can study part-time at POLY IBADAN with or without JAMB.
3. DAILY PART-TIME PROGRAMME (DPP): This programme is the most popular program in Poly Ibadan because it is similar to a full-time programme. The daily part-time programme is also for students who did not meet the general cut-off mark as DPP admission is like direct entry. The duration for this programme is two years, and lectures and other academic activities are the same as in the full-time programme. The only difference is school fees. Writing JAMB is part of the requirements for the DPP programme. For you to be considered for DPP admission, you need to score at least 120 in your UTME.

ACCOMMODATION.
In Ibadan, a single room can be obtained for between 25k and 30k per year, depending on location, while accommodation in the school hostel costs around 30k per session. So if you would like to stay in the school hostel, budget 30K. The hostels inside the school are Orisun and Unity Hostel on the south campus; Olori and Ramat Hostel on the north campus. Self-contained in Ibadan ranges from 80k and above depending on your budget. Popular streets and locations in Ibadan where students dominate the most are Apete, Sango, and Bodija etc.
ADMISSION.
POLY IBADAN Admission is very strict but not that difficult if you are a serious student. Admission to the part-time programme is by direct entry.
A. ND ADMISSION: To gain admission to the Polytechnic Ibadan, applicants must have scored at least 150 in their UTME to be qualified for the POST UTME examination/screening. The polytechnic conducts entrance examinations for candidates and sometimes they use only UTME to screen students, so the higher your UTME score, the higher your chance of being admitted to POLY IBADAN. ND candidates must possess five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language and Mathematics at O’level.

B. HND ADMISSION: HND Admission is also strict because the school will still conduct a CBT entrance examination and oral interviews for all applicants before they can be offered admission. So if you wish to further your education in POLY IBADAN for HND, I will advise you to prepare very well so that you will pass the school’s CBT examination and interview. HND full-time admission isn’t direct entry; you have to pass and meet the required score to be admitted as a full-time student. In addition, the requirements for POLY IBADAN HND full-time programme are a minimum of 2.50 CGPA at your ND level and five credit passes at O’level at not more than two sittings either in WAEC, NECO, GCE or NABTEB. Candidates with a CGPA below 2.50 would have to present evidence of 2 years of industrial work experience.
