Shocking: NYSC Corpers Now Earn More Than Assistant Lecturers in Kaduna State Polytechnic

A wave of concern has swept through the academic community after the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Mr. Usman Shehu Suleiman, revealed that serving NYSC members now earn more than entry-level assistant lecturers at Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, a state-owned institution in Kaduna State.
In a Facebook post that has since gone viral, Mr. Usman lamented the poor remuneration of lecturers, pointing out that level 7 lecturers at the polytechnic currently earn a monthly salary of just ₦64,800. This figure is lower than the monthly allowance paid to NYSC corps members, which currently stands at around ₦77,000 from the federal government, with some corps members receiving additional stipends from their place of primary assignment.
Mr. Usman wrote, expressing frustration over the deteriorating state of lecturers’ welfare in Kaduna State. He stressed that it is disheartening to see graduates undergoing national service earning more than qualified academic staff tasked with shaping the minds of future professionals.
The revelation has sparked debates online, with many questioning the state’s commitment to education and the motivation for young professionals to pursue careers in academia.
Stakeholders are now calling on the Kaduna State government to review and adjust the salary structure for polytechnic staff to reflect current realities and retain skilled educators in the system.
