YABATECH Convocation 2025: 8,654 Graduates to Get Certificates on the Same Day – Boosting Education and Career Opportunities

The Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, has announced that graduating students will now receive their certificates on the same day as their convocation. This new policy is aimed at eliminating long delays that graduates previously faced when collecting their credentials.
The Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, disclosed this during a press conference ahead of the institution’s 37th convocation ceremony. He stated that once students complete their clearance, they will receive their graduation scrolls containing their certificates without any waiting period.
According to him, “Our students will now get their certificates on the day of convocation. The era of empty scrolls is over. Those who complete their clearance will go home with their certificates immediately.”
A total of 8,654 graduates will be awarded diplomas on November 20. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, will serve as the Special Guest of Honour. Out of the graduating students, 291 achieved Distinction, 2,434 earned Upper Credit, 4,403 finished with Lower Credit, while 1,526 will graduate with a Pass.
The best graduating student, Ani Faith from the Department of Office Technology Management, earned a CGPA of 3.9 out of 4.0.
Convocation Lecture Focuses on Digital Entrepreneurship and Job Creation
The convocation lecture will be delivered by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele. The lecture, titled “Entrepreneurship Development in the Digital Age: Leveraging Technology for Job Creation and Economic Growth,” will address national strategies for boosting employment and supporting digital innovation. The event will be chaired by the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele.
Dr. Abdul noted that the ideas presented at the lecture will support the government’s goals on digital transformation and economic diversification.
YABATECH Honours Three National Figures
During the convocation, Fellowship Awards of Yaba College of Technology will be conferred on Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Solomon Olamilekan, and BUA Group Chairman, Abdul-Samad Rabiu. The Rector said the honorees have demonstrated outstanding leadership in education, industry, and national development. He added that their achievements will inspire students pursuing careers in technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Update on YABATECH’s Upgrade to University Status
Dr. Abdul also addressed the ongoing process of upgrading YABATECH to a university. He confirmed that the college has completed all requirements on its part, including defending the proposal at the National Assembly.
He stated that the institution has the capacity needed for the transition, including more than 200 doctorate degree holders among its staff and well-developed facilities. While awaiting final approval, he expressed optimism that the upgrade will take effect soon.
According to him, “We have fulfilled all obligations required for the upgrade. We have the manpower, facilities, and expertise. We are hopeful that the government will finalize the process in due time.”
