Top 10 Sleep Apnea Treatment Options Covered by Insurance

Waking up exhausted every morning, snoring so loudly that your partner sleeps in another room — sleep apnea can drain energy, strain relationships, and raise the risk of serious health problems like heart disease and stroke. Thankfully, effective treatments exist, and many of them are covered by insurance, so you don’t have to fight sleep apnea alone or empty your savings just to breathe better at night.

If you’re wondering which sleep apnea treatments your insurance might help pay for, here’s a look at some of the most trusted and commonly covered options to help you sleep soundly and safely again.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Machine

The CPAP machine remains the gold standard for treating obstructive sleep apnea. It delivers a constant stream of air through a mask, keeping your airway open while you sleep. Most private insurance plans and Medicare cover CPAP machines and supplies, including replacement masks, filters, and tubing.

To qualify, you’ll need a sleep study showing a diagnosis of sleep apnea. Many insurance companies also check compliance — you must use your CPAP regularly to keep coverage for supplies.

BiPAP Machine

For people who can’t tolerate standard CPAP or who have central sleep apnea, a BiPAP machine may be prescribed instead. This machine provides two levels of air pressure: one for inhaling and a lower one for exhaling. It can feel more comfortable for those who struggle with CPAP.

Most insurance companies that cover CPAP also cover BiPAP with a doctor’s prescription and proof that CPAP didn’t work well enough.

AutoPAP (APAP)

An AutoPAP adjusts air pressure automatically through the night based on your breathing. This flexibility can help people who find a fixed pressure uncomfortable. AutoPAP machines are usually covered the same way as CPAP, as long as your doctor writes the prescription and your diagnosis meets medical guidelines.

Oral Appliances

Oral appliances are mouthpieces that keep your tongue or jaw in a position that helps your airway stay open. They work best for mild to moderate sleep apnea or for people who can’t handle a CPAP mask.

Many dental appliances are covered partially by medical insurance if your doctor and a sleep dentist say they’re medically necessary. Check your plan — some insurers require that you try CPAP first.

Sleep Position Devices

Some people have sleep apnea mainly when sleeping on their backs. A positional therapy device — like a special vibrating belt or wearable monitor — trains you to sleep on your side instead. Some insurance plans cover these devices if a doctor prescribes them and a sleep study shows you have positional sleep apnea.

Surgery

When other options fail, surgery might be needed to remove or shrink tissue blocking your airway. Common procedures include removing tonsils or excess throat tissue or repositioning parts of the jaw.

Some surgeries, like UPPP (Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) or Inspire (a small implant that stimulates airway muscles), are covered by insurance when proven medically necessary. An ENT specialist will guide you through pre-approval.

Inspire Sleep Apnea Implant

Inspire is an FDA-approved implant that works inside the body to prevent the airway from collapsing. It’s recommended for people with moderate to severe sleep apnea who can’t use CPAP. Inspire requires surgery but can be life-changing for some patients.

Most major insurance companies — including Medicare — cover Inspire when other treatments don’t work and certain medical criteria are met.

Weight Loss Programs

Being overweight can worsen sleep apnea. Some insurance plans cover medically supervised weight loss programs or even weight loss surgery for patients whose apnea is linked to obesity and who meet certain body mass index (BMI) requirements.

Treating the root cause with weight loss can reduce apnea episodes and sometimes eliminate them altogether.

Nasal Devices and Surgery

For people whose apnea is linked to nasal blockages, procedures to fix a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates can improve airflow. Nasal strips or special nasal CPAP masks are also covered under durable medical equipment benefits in many insurance plans.

Talk to your doctor about what’s blocking your breathing — sometimes a simple fix can make CPAP work better.

Behavioral Therapy

Sleep apnea is often made worse by habits like smoking, alcohol use, or poor sleep hygiene. Counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for insomnia, or programs to quit smoking are often covered by health insurance under preventive care or mental health benefits.

Combining therapy with medical treatment can make a huge difference in long-term sleep quality.

What to Know About Insurance and Sleep Apnea Treatments

To get your treatment covered, your insurer will probably ask for a diagnosis from a sleep study. Many policies pay for at-home sleep tests, which are more convenient than spending a night in a lab. Once diagnosed, your doctor will recommend the right device or treatment and help handle the paperwork to get it covered.

Check your plan’s rules on replacement supplies — CPAP masks and hoses need regular replacement, and insurance usually pays for new parts every few months if you show proof of use.
