TETFund 2026 Grants Disbursement: How ₦6.452 Billion Will Be Shared Among Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund has announced plans to disburse a total of ₦6.452 billion to beneficiary tertiary institutions across Nigeria under its 2026 intervention cycle.
The disclosure was made in Abuja by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, during a stakeholders’ workshop held with heads of beneficiary institutions to outline the guidelines for the 2026 funding disbursement.
According to Echono, the 2026 intervention will adopt a uniform allocation structure for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, in line with the Fund’s objective of strengthening infrastructure development, academic programmes, research capacity, and overall productivity within Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
He explained that under the approved framework, each university will receive ₦2.525 billion, while polytechnics will receive ₦1.871 billion each, and colleges of education ₦2.056 billion respectively. The total direct disbursement accounts for about 90.75 percent of the allocated funds, comprising 50 percent annual direct disbursements and 43.75 percent special direct disbursements.
Echono stated that 271 beneficiary institutions are expected to receive allocations under the annual direct disbursement component. He noted that all universities, regardless of age, size, or student population, will receive ₦2,525,932,228.02 each. Polytechnics are to receive ₦1,871,059,920.53 per institution, while colleges of education will receive ₦2,056,527,973.04 each.
He said the intervention is designed to address critical needs across the sector, including the upgrade of physical infrastructure, enhancement of teaching and learning facilities, expansion of academic programmes, and support for research and innovation. The initiative is also expected to improve the quality, relevance, and global competitiveness of research output from Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The TETFund Executive Secretary added that the 2026 intervention will introduce a new funding line aimed at expanding access to global academic resources and integrating the Tertiary Education, Research, Applications and Services platform with the Nigerian Research and Education Network. According to him, this integration is expected to take effect from the 2026 intervention cycle and strengthen digital collaboration across institutions.
He described 2026 as a year of significant growth and innovation for the tertiary education sector, noting that the Fund remains committed to delivering measurable impact through strategic investments.
Echono further revealed that TETFund will continue to upgrade research and development facilities, laboratories, and workshops nationwide, while also expanding student exposure programmes through partnerships with the private sector. He disclosed that several research laboratories are currently under development, with four expected to be completed and commissioned within the year, while two additional facilities have commenced construction and are scheduled for completion in the following year.
In the agricultural sector, he said the Fund is transitioning large university farms to modern greenhouse systems and mechanised equipment to boost productivity and reduce labour intensity. He also highlighted plans to strengthen the Fund’s ICT roadmap through expanded digital services, experience centres, substation-based internet access, and advanced international education research and application services.
The TETFund boss urged heads of beneficiary institutions to ensure full utilisation of their 2025 allocations, stressing that future disbursements will be tied to performance, enrolment figures, and demonstrated progress on funded projects. He warned that institutions with unutilised funds would not receive additional allocations until existing resources are fully deployed.
Echono added that the Fund is intensifying efforts to promote knowledge sharing, support skills development initiatives, and ensure timely payment to contractors handling TETFund-sponsored projects.
TETFund has consistently increased its intervention funding in recent years. In the 2024 intervention cycle, the Fund approved over ₦643 billion for public tertiary institutions nationwide, with universities receiving about ₦1.9 billion each, polytechnics around ₦1.16 billion, and colleges of education approximately ₦1.4 billion. The majority of the funds were directed toward infrastructure development and academic support.
For the 2025 intervention cycle, allocations were further increased to about ₦700 billion, with universities set to receive roughly ₦2.8 billion each, polytechnics ₦1.9 billion, and colleges of education ₦2.1 billion. More than 91 percent of the funds were reserved for direct disbursement, with a stronger focus on infrastructure upgrades, research and innovation, and rehabilitation of deteriorating facilities.
The 2026 disbursement plan reinforces the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s tertiary education system through sustained investment, improved accountability, and targeted funding for long-term academic and economic development.
