Step-by-Step Guide to Applying for a USA Tourist Visa from Nigeria

Dreaming of visiting the United States for vacation, sightseeing, or perhaps spending time with family and friends? The USA tourist visa, also known as the B1/B2 visa, is the official pass that allows Nigerians to travel temporarily to America for tourism, medical treatment, or short visits. While many people desire this opportunity, the application process can feel overwhelming if you don’t know where to begin.

This guide will take you through each stage of the process in detail, so you know exactly what to expect, how to prepare, and how to avoid common mistakes that could cost you time or money. By the end, you’ll feel confident about your application and ready to take the next step toward making your American trip a reality.

1. Know the Type of Visa You Need

For tourism purposes, the United States offers the B1/B2 visa.

  • The B1 visa is mainly for business visitors, meetings, or conferences.
  • The B2 visa is for tourism, vacations, family visits, and medical purposes.

Most Nigerians apply for the combined B1/B2 visa, which allows both tourism and limited business activities. Before applying, make sure this visa type suits your purpose of travel, as applying for the wrong category can lead to refusal.

2. Complete the DS-160 Form Online

The DS-160 form is the official online application for non-immigrant visas to the United States.

Here’s how to fill it out:

  1. Visit the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC) website.
  2. Select your location as Nigeria (Abuja or Lagos).
  3. Fill in personal details such as name, date of birth, passport information, and intended travel plans.
  4. Upload a recent passport-sized photo that meets US visa requirements.
  5. Double-check all details before submitting, as errors can affect your chances.

After submission, you’ll receive a DS-160 confirmation page with a barcode. Print this page because you’ll need it for the interview.

3. Pay the Visa Application Fee

Currently, the visa fee for a USA tourist visa is $185 (this may change, so always confirm the latest fee on the official embassy website). Payment is made online or through designated banks in Nigeria.

Keep your payment receipt safe, as it is required to schedule your interview appointment.

4. Create a Profile on the CGI Federal Website

Once the DS-160 form is submitted and the fee is paid, the next step is to create a profile on the CGI Federal website.

<

Through this profile, you will:

  • Schedule your visa interview.
  • Select the location (Abuja or Lagos).
  • Choose an available interview date that works best for you.

This platform also allows you to track your application status.

5. Schedule and Attend Your Visa Interview

The interview is the most important stage of the visa process. It takes place at either the US Embassy in Abuja or the US Consulate in Lagos.

What to bring to your interview:

  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • Visa fee receipt
  • Valid passport (at least 6 months validity beyond your intended stay)
  • Appointment confirmation letter
  • Recent passport photographs
  • Supporting documents such as bank statements, employment letter, business documents, proof of ties to Nigeria, and itinerary details

During the interview, the consular officer will ask you questions about your trip, financial stability, employment status, and ties to Nigeria. Answer honestly and confidently.

6. Prepare Strong Supporting Documents

Many Nigerians get denied visas because they fail to prove they have strong ties to Nigeria. The embassy wants to be sure you’ll return after your trip.

Common supporting documents include:

  • Recent bank statements showing you can afford your trip.
  • Employment letter from your employer confirming your role, salary, and approved leave.
  • Business registration documents if you are self-employed.
  • Property ownership documents or tenancy agreements.
  • Family ties, such as marriage certificates or children’s birth certificates.

The more evidence you provide of your life in Nigeria, the higher your chances of approval.

7. Biometrics and Fingerprinting

Before or during the interview, you’ll be required to provide biometrics. This includes digital fingerprints and a photograph. It’s part of the security process, so make sure your hands are clean and free from injuries that could affect fingerprint scanning.

8. Wait for the Visa Decision

After the interview, the consular officer will either approve, deny, or place your visa under administrative processing. If approved, your passport will be collected and returned to you with the visa stamp after a few days.

If denied, you will be informed under which section of the immigration law your application failed. Common reasons include weak financial proof, lack of strong ties to Nigeria, or incomplete documentation.

9. Collect Your Passport

If your visa is approved, you’ll be notified when and where to collect your passport. Some applicants may choose home delivery if available. Always double-check that the visa details are correct before making travel plans.

10. Prepare for Your Travel

Once your visa is in hand, you can book your flight and make travel arrangements. Remember:

  • Book with airlines that fly directly or transit conveniently to the US.
  • Carry all supporting documents with you when traveling, as immigration officers at the US border may ask questions.
  • Respect the visa duration to avoid overstaying, which can affect future applications.
