Skincare Routine for Men with Oily Skin: 9 Steps That Actually Work (Without Making It Worse)

If your face constantly looks like a greasy frying pan by midday, no matter how often you wash it, you’re not alone. Oily skin can turn even the cleanest guy into a walking shine factory. Worse, it often leads to clogged pores, blackheads, and surprise breakouts that show up before dates or meetings.

Here’s the kicker—most men are treating oily skin the wrong way. Scrubbing harder, over-washing, or using harsh products only pushes your skin to produce even more oil. The real fix lies in balance. When you give your skin what it needs—without stripping it—oil production starts to regulate itself.

Let’s break down the exact skincare steps every man with oily skin should follow daily to keep the shine away and the breakouts at bay.

1. Start With a Gentle, Oil-Free Cleanser

A harsh soap might feel like it’s cleaning all the oil off—but it’s actually triggering your skin to produce more oil as a defense mechanism. Instead, start your day with a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser formulated specifically for oily skin.

Look for ingredients like:

  • Salicylic acid to help unclog pores
  • Tea tree oil for its antibacterial effects
  • Niacinamide to help reduce oil production without drying you out

Wash your face twice daily—once in the morning and once before bed. Any more than that, and you risk irritating your skin.

2. Always Use a Toner (But Skip the Alcohol)

Toners are often overlooked, but they’re essential for oily skin. A good toner removes any leftover dirt and oil after cleansing, shrinks pores, and prepares your skin to absorb moisturizers and treatments. Avoid any product with alcohol in the first few ingredients. It might feel refreshing, but it dries out your skin and triggers more oil production. Instead, choose toners that contain witch hazel, green tea, or aloe vera. These ingredients tighten pores and calm the skin without creating more oil.

3. Don’t Skip Moisturizer (Seriously)

This is where many guys with oily skin go wrong—they skip moisturizing, thinking it will make their face less greasy. The opposite happens. Depriving your skin of moisture causes it to overcompensate by producing more oil.

Use a lightweight, oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer daily. Look for products labeled “gel-based” or “matte finish.”

Moisturizing keeps your skin hydrated and signals your sebaceous glands to chill out.

4. Exfoliate Twice a Week to Keep Pores Clear

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells that trap oil and lead to clogged pores and breakouts. But too much exfoliation irritates the skin and makes things worse.

Stick to twice a week, and use a chemical exfoliant like salicylic acid or glycolic acid rather than a physical scrub with rough particles. These chemical exfoliants work by dissolving debris inside your pores instead of scrubbing the surface. Regular exfoliation helps reduce shine, prevent blackheads, and promote smoother skin.

5. Use a Clay Mask Weekly

Think of clay masks as a vacuum cleaner for your pores. They draw out excess oil, dirt, and toxins—making your face look fresher and more matte.

Use a bentonite or kaolin clay mask once or twice a week. Apply it to clean skin, let it dry, and rinse off thoroughly. Don’t overdo it—your skin still needs some oil to stay healthy. Follow up with a moisturizer after every mask session to maintain balance.

6. Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable (Even If It Feels Greasy)

Sun exposure dries out your skin and causes it to produce even more oil to protect itself. Skipping sunscreen is one of the fastest ways to make oily skin worse—and increase your risk of dark spots and premature wrinkles.

Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen made for oily skin. Look for:

  • Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide
  • Matte finish or oil-control formulas
  • Gel-based or water-based options that won’t clog your pores

Apply sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days.

7. Use Blotting Papers or Mattifying Powders During the Day

Sometimes oily skin shines through, even with the best skincare routine. Keep oil blotting papers in your bag or car to dab away excess shine during the day. They absorb oil without removing your skincare products or messing up your face. You can also use a matte powder designed for men’s skin if you want to keep things dry and shine-free longer—especially before events or photo ops.

8. Check Your Hair and Beard Products

Many men overlook this one—your hair gel, pomade, or beard balm might be causing your oily skin problems. These products often contain oils and silicones that migrate to your forehead or cheeks, clogging pores and making your skin greasy.

Stick to non-comedogenic, lightweight hair products, and keep them off your face. Always wash your hands after styling your hair before touching your skin.

If you have a beard, use beard oil sparingly and avoid heavy oils like coconut or castor if you’re prone to breakouts.

9. Clean Your Phone, Pillowcase, and Sunglasses Regularly

Oily skin isn’t just about your face—it’s also about what touches it every day. Your phone screen collects bacteria and oil, which transfers to your cheek every time you take a call.

Same goes for:

  • Pillowcases: Wash or change them 1–2 times a week.
  • Sunglasses: Clean the nose pads and frame with alcohol wipes.
  • Towels: Use a clean towel for your face—don’t reuse the one you dry your body with.

Clean surfaces = fewer breakouts and better oil control.
