Polytechnic Workers Issue Fresh 14-Day Ultimatum to Federal Government Over Unmet Demands

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) has once again raised alarm over the Federal Government’s slow response to pressing labour issues, issuing a fresh 14-day ultimatum to avert a nationwide strike.
In a letter addressed to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, SSANIP President Nura Gaya confirmed that the union is granting the government a final window to meet key demands that affect thousands of staff and students across Nigeria’s polytechnic sector.
The association’s previous 21-day ultimatum, issued on August 27, 2025, expired on September 17 without a satisfactory response from the government. According to the union, the lack of concrete action has forced them to extend the deadline while maintaining their commitment to industrial peace.

Outstanding Demands
SSANIP listed several unresolved issues that must be addressed to avoid a shutdown of the polytechnic system. These include:
- Release of the New Schemes and Conditions of Service for the Polytechnic Sector.
- Constitution of a Renegotiation Committee for the long-pending 2010 Agreement.
- Disbursement of the 2023, 2024, and 2025 NEEDS Assessment Funds.
- Payment of Arrears owed to staff across various institutions.
The union emphasized that these demands are critical for improving staff welfare, enhancing infrastructure, and sustaining quality education in Nigerian polytechnics.
Government’s Reaction
Responding to the ultimatum, Ministry of Education spokesperson Folasade Boriowo assured that officials are working diligently to resolve the issues. She noted that discussions are ongoing to meet the union’s requests and prevent an industrial crisis that could disrupt academic calendars nationwide.
A nationwide strike by polytechnic workers could paralyze academic activities, delay graduations, and create financial losses for students and parents. The outcome of this negotiation will also set a precedent for labour relations in Nigeria’s higher education sector, which has been plagued by recurring disputes over funding, wages, and infrastructure.
