Oyo State Tertiary Institutions Declare Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salary Increase and Wage Delays
Academic activities in five Oyo State-owned tertiary institutions have come to a halt as the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Trade Unions declared an indefinite strike over the government’s failure to implement the approved 25%–35% salary increase and the new minimum wage.

Academic activities in five Oyo State-owned tertiary institutions have come to a halt as the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Trade Unions declared an indefinite strike over the government’s failure to implement the approved 25%–35% salary increase and the new minimum wage.
The strike, which began today, affects:
- The Polytechnic, Ibadan
- The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki
- Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa
- Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora
- Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate
Despite multiple meetings with stakeholders, including Platinum Consultants and the Commissioner for Education, JAC says the government has failed to meet its commitments. The unions also expressed concerns over financial instability, increased work demands, and poor funding, which have hindered academic progress in these institutions.
In a statement, Dr. Kola Lawal (JAC Chairman) and Comr. Fatai Akeem Abiola (JAC Secretary) emphasized that their demands are simple:
- Immediate implementation of the approved salary increase and new minimum wage.
- Increased subvention to the institutions to meet financial obligations, including salary payments.
The unions have called on Governor Seyi Makinde to urgently resolve the matter, warning that the strike will continue until their demands are met.
With students left in uncertainty and academic activities stalled, all eyes are now on the state government’s next move. Will the administration address the crisis, or will the strike persist indefinitely? Let’s keep watching
