Outrage as PhD Holder Works as Cleaner at Ebonyi State University Despite Decades of Academic Pursuit

Shock and concern have trailed the story of Dr. Enyi Onyebuchi Paul, a Nigerian man who, despite earning a PhD in Mathematics Education, currently works as a cleaner at Ebonyi State University (EBSU) in Abakaliki.
Originally hired in 2007 as a cleaner/messenger, Dr. Enyi—who hails from Ikelegu Ishieke in Ebonyi LGA—pursued his academic goals with remarkable determination, earning a BSc, MSc, and PhD, all from the same university where he remains in a menial role.
His story came to light after journalist Odo Godfrey Chikwere of Legacy 95.1 FM shared it on social media, lamenting the disconnect between Dr. Enyi’s qualifications and his current position.
“This is Dr. Enyi Onyebuchi Paul… he struggled to see himself through university education in the same school, earning a PhD in 2022,” Odo wrote, revealing that the doctorate holder still earns less than ₦70,000 monthly. Odo called on influential figures from the Izzi community to intervene and advocate for a role that matches Dr. Enyi’s credentials.
“This guy’s case should be an embarrassment to any Izzi man he approached for assistance but they turned him down,” he added.
The story has since gone viral, sparking widespread criticism and a wave of empathy, with many Nigerians demanding accountability from the university and a better future for Dr. Enyi.
