NSE Urges New Engineering Graduates to Help Build a Stronger Nigeria

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has encouraged newly inducted engineers from Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, to channel their knowledge and creativity toward national development.
The professional body, which oversees the regulation and advancement of engineering practice in Nigeria, made this appeal during the induction ceremony of the university’s eighth set of engineering graduates for the 2024/2025 academic session.
Engineers as Nation Builders
Speaking on behalf of NSE President, Engr. Margaret Oguntala, the Chairman of the Akure Branch, Engr. Oluwaseun Adeyeye, highlighted the vital role of engineers in shaping a modern and technologically advanced Nigeria.
He emphasized that the engineering profession is rapidly evolving and that graduates must stay updated with modern technologies, emerging trends, and global best practices to remain relevant in the competitive job market.
“As engineers, we must be ready to think creatively, challenge traditional methods, and design innovative solutions to real-life problems,” Adeyeye said. “Collaboration, networking, and integrity are essential in our profession. Build strong professional relationships with mentors, colleagues, and industry experts. Together, we can transform ideas into impact.”
Commitment to Innovation and Ethics
Oguntala also urged the graduates to embrace innovation, integrity, and excellence in their professional careers, adding that Nigeria’s growth depends largely on the ingenuity and commitment of its engineers.
“Innovation and creativity drive progress and help solve complex challenges. I encourage you to remain committed to ethical standards and make meaningful contributions in your communities,” she noted.
Elizade University Charges Graduates to Keep Learning
In his remarks, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Elizade University, Prof. Sunday Adeyemo, congratulated the graduates and reminded them that engineering goes beyond a career — it is a lifelong mission to solve problems and improve society.
“Engineering is a calling to create and innovate. You design the roads, bridges, energy systems, and technologies that define civilization,” Adeyemo said.
“Your degree comes with responsibility. Always place humanity at the center of every project, and remember that continuous learning and creativity are the tools that will keep you relevant in this fast-changing world.”
Engineering Education and the Future of Nigeria
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dare Adetan, also advised the new engineers to pursue continuous professional development and contribute solutions to pressing challenges such as infrastructure, energy, and climate adaptation.
“Engineering challenges are becoming more complex. From renewable energy to digital transformation, the opportunities for skilled engineers are limitless,” Adetan said. “Stay curious, be innovative, and join a local branch of the NSE to keep growing professionally.”
He added that joining professional networks like the NSE helps young engineers gain mentorship, connect with industry leaders, and access international opportunities.
A Call to Action
The NSE continues to emphasize the role of engineering professionals in driving national growth through infrastructure, technology, and sustainable development. The body, established in 1958, remains the leading organization responsible for promoting engineering excellence, ethical conduct, and innovation in Nigeria.
As Nigeria strives to advance in areas such as infrastructure development, energy transition, and digital innovation, the contribution of young engineers is more important than ever.
