The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) offers a Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc.) program designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the nursing profession. Admission Requirements
NOUN’s B.N.Sc. program is structured for direct entry into the 200 level. To be eligible, applicants must meet specific academic and professional criteria:
Academic Qualifications:
- O-Level Results: Applicants must have a minimum of five credit passes in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or its equivalent. The required subjects include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. These credits should be obtained in no more than two sittings.
Professional Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse (RN) Certification: Candidates must possess a valid Registered Nurse certificate from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
- Current Practice License: A valid practice license issued by the NMCN is mandatory.
- Work Experience: Applicants should have a minimum of six months of clinical experience. A letter of attestation from the current place of clinical practice is required to confirm this experience.
It’s important to note that the B.N.Sc. program at NOUN is exclusively available to individuals who are already registered nurses. This structure is designed to build upon existing nursing knowledge and experience, advancing students’ expertise in the field.
Program Structure and Duration
The B.N.Sc. program spans four academic years, equivalent to eight semesters. Throughout this period, students engage in both theoretical coursework and practical clinical training. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of nursing science, encompassing various specialties and advanced practices.
Graduation Requirements
To successfully graduate from the B.N.Sc. program, students must fulfill the following criteria:
- Credit Units: A minimum of 148 credit units is required, which includes 18 units of university electives.
- Core Courses: Students must pass all compulsory core courses as outlined in the program’s curriculum.

For students in the Faculty of Health Sciences, additional fees apply for practical components:
- Practicum/Clinical Attachment Fees:
