NAF, TETFund Strengthen Partnership to Boost Tertiary Education, Research and Technology Development

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to receive additional institutional support from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) as both organisations move to strengthen collaboration aimed at advancing tertiary education, research and technology development in Nigeria.

The development was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, following a courtesy visit by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

The visit focused on reinforcing the long-standing partnership between the Nigerian Air Force and TETFund, with both institutions reaffirming their commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s tertiary education system through improved infrastructure, research funding and academic capacity development.

During the meeting, Air Marshal Aneke commended TETFund for its consistent support to the Nigerian Air Force, particularly in enhancing academic and technical training across its educational institutions.

He noted that TETFund’s interventions over the years have played a significant role in improving educational infrastructure, funding research programmes and expanding training opportunities for both academic staff and students.

According to him, sustained investment in education is essential for developing highly skilled personnel capable of meeting the demands of modern air power operations and national security.

Aneke emphasised that strengthening educational institutions within the Air Force contributes directly to Nigeria’s broader development goals by producing professionals equipped with advanced technical knowledge and leadership capacity.

He also expressed appreciation for the strong collaboration between TETFund and the Nigerian Air Force, noting that the renewed partnership would further enhance innovation, research output and human capital development within NAF educational institutions.

The Air Chief described TETFund as a key driver of national development whose impact is widely recognised across Nigerian tertiary institutions. He said the organisation’s logo has become synonymous with quality education, modern infrastructure and academic advancement.

According to him, TETFund has built a strong reputation as a catalyst for academic excellence, research innovation and human capacity development within Nigeria’s higher education sector.

Aneke highlighted the significant impact of TETFund’s interventions in the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), noting that the institution has benefited greatly from infrastructure development and academic support.

He explained that AFIT has grown into one of Nigeria’s leading institutions for aviation and aerospace-related studies due to its reputation for academic excellence, strict discipline and uninterrupted academic calendars.

The Chief of Air Staff said TETFund’s contributions, including the provision of well-equipped laboratories, modern learning facilities and student accommodation, have created an environment that supports effective teaching, learning and research.

He added that the visit was also an opportunity to express appreciation for previous support while exploring new areas of collaboration that could extend beyond aerospace and defence education to include the health sector.

Aneke also drew attention to the Nigerian Air Force College of Nursing, which operates alongside the School of Medical Sciences and Aviation Medicine. The college provides specialised training in nursing and healthcare services and is regulated by the National Board for Technical Education as well as the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

He explained that TETFund’s continued support for infrastructure development and academic capacity building would further strengthen these institutions while contributing to Nigeria’s healthcare system by producing well-trained medical professionals.

As part of efforts to deepen collaboration, the Air Chief outlined several areas where additional support from TETFund could enhance institutional growth.

He proposed the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence and robotics laboratory at the Air Force Institute of Technology to promote research and innovation in emerging technologies critical to aerospace engineering, defence technology and digital transformation.

Aneke also requested support for the construction of a five-kilometre perimeter security fence equipped with smart surveillance technology to improve security around the institution.

In addition, he sought assistance in developing residential accommodation for both teaching and non-teaching staff as part of efforts to improve staff welfare and retain highly skilled personnel.

Responding to the requests, Echono reaffirmed the strategic importance of the Nigerian Air Force in safeguarding national security while also contributing to educational development.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing Air Marshal Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, describing him as a respected officer whose leadership would sustain excellence within the Nigerian Air Force.

Echono also acknowledged the sacrifices made daily by members of the armed forces in protecting the country, noting that their efforts often go unnoticed unless major incidents occur.

The TETFund Executive Secretary assured the Air Chief that several intervention projects for the Air Force Institute of Technology, including staff accommodation and additional infrastructure development, have already been scheduled for implementation within the year.

He emphasised that TETFund’s interventions are not limited to physical infrastructure but are also designed to improve the overall teaching and learning environment in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

According to him, AFIT has become one of the most sought-after institutions in Nigeria due to its high-quality faculty, disciplined academic culture and consistent academic calendar.

Echono further revealed that TETFund is expanding its support to teaching hospitals and faculties of medicine, pharmacy, nursing and dentistry across the country as part of a broader initiative to strengthen healthcare education and medical research.

He explained that these efforts are aimed at producing highly skilled professionals while improving the quality of medical training in Nigerian universities and specialised institutions.

The TETFund boss added that the agency is also working to create world-class learning environments capable of attracting international students, a move that could help position Nigeria as a competitive destination for higher education in Africa.

Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration, noting that strategic investments in tertiary education, research and digital technology will play a vital role in strengthening Nigeria’s human capital and long-term national development.
