MacPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State, is set to graduate a total of 281 students at its combined 8th and 9th Convocation Ceremonies and Conferment of Diplomas, First Degrees, Higher Degrees, and Presentation of Prizes, scheduled for Friday, February 28, 2025.

Of the graduates, 24 will be receiving First Class honors, 116 will graduate with Second Class Upper, 65 with Second Class Lower, and 13 with Third Class degrees.

Addressing journalists at a press conference to announce the event, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Francis Igbasan, revealed that the Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities in Ekiti State, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, will deliver the Convocation Lecture titled “A Nation in Transition: Managing the Yearnings of its Restless Youths.”

Prof. Igbasan noted that the vision of the university, owned by Foursquare Gospel Church Nigeria, is to build a people of excellence and integrity for service. The university’s mission is to provide qualitative, functional, and sound education with godly virtues that will prepare men and women for leadership and a positive impact on society.

He said, “Before next year’s Convocation exercise in 2026, we intend to establish a Bachelor’s Programme in Telecommunication Engineering and Electrical Engineering. We have plans to also Civil Engineering, Industrial Relations, and Pharmacy, and commence Postgraduate programmes in Mass Communication, Economics and History, and International Studies.

“We are not unaware of some unwelcoming anti-social vices prevalent among the youths that have started creeping into the University Campus.

“Here at McPherson University, no room for such behaviour. About 14 students have been placed on suspension in this academic session alone. So, we don’t condone indiscipline here.

“This is because our certificate is a testament to our integrity and an affirmation that the recipient has been found worthy in learning and character.”

Igbasan again sought the inclusion of private Universities as beneficiaries of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

He lamented that the continued exclusion of private varsities as beneficiaries of the two federal government interventions will amount to depriving students of private institutions who are bonafide citizens of Nigeria of their rights.

He maintained that the federal government has no reason to exclude private varsities who also contributed to the growth of the nation from the intervention.

He appealed to the government to consider private Universities as beneficiaries, saying private institutions need the intervention to develop their infrastructures and train their personnel.

He said, “Excluding us from the intervention is like shortchanging the students, these students are citizens of Nigeria who will also contribute to the economy of the nation after leaving school.

“Private Universities are crying, the fund is not only meant for public institutions alone but private Universities inclusive. Excluding us from the fund is discrimination, it is bad, every student should have equal access to the fund.”
