LASU HOLDS ORIENTATION PROGRAMME FOR FULL TIME DEGREE WITH ENTREPRENEURSHIP STUDENTS

The Lagos State University Directorate of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship (DSDE), in a bid to familiarise the newly admitted full-time students with entrepreneurship options on offer in the university, held its orientation programme on Tuesday, 30th April 2024 at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, main campus, Ojo, Lagos.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Omotunde Boyo, in her address, encouraged the students to open their minds, sharpen their entrepreneurial potential to enable them to take advantage of opportunities for their economic emancipation and focus their attention to sellable skills within their environment.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello averred that the objective of the programme is not to only provide hands-on training in different entrepreneurship skills areas, but also to create a platform where students’ entrepreneurship ideas can be nurtured and incubated till they can firmly stand on their own.
Earlier at the event, the Acting Director, DSDE, Dr. Habeeb Sanni, who was represented by the Deputy Director, Dr Francis Dansu, while delivering his welcome address, affirmed that the Directorate is saddled with the responsibility of enlightening the students as a result of the economic challenge facing the country and indeed, other parts of the world. “It has become a necessity that universities should redirect their focus from producing job seekers to training and developing human capital who will effectively fit into the reality of the changing world, to prepare youths to be employers of labour, and to produce graduates who will take the initiatives to speedily develop our local economy and extend same to the larger world”, he said.
He also highlighted some of the entrepreneurship skills offered by the Directorate, which the freshmen could choose from, such as Event Planning, Bag Making, Makeup and Cosmetics, and many more. He assured them that the Directorate, through their esteemed facilitators, would groom them to be employers of labour and not job seekers.
The Guest Speaker at the orientation programme, Chief Executive Officer/ Managing Director, Sedav Projects and Construction Services Limited, Engr Olubayo Akinwunmi, while speaking to the students, explained the meaning of Entrepreneurship, benefits of being an entrepreneur, the pyramid of wealth creation, and steps to be significant in life.
He further charged the students to identify their area of business passion, learn some skills to sharpen their talent, and focus on significance and not survival.



Others who spoke at the orientation programme included, Dr. Oni Buraimoh, Director DICT, who was represented by Mr. Ojediran Alaba Bolaji, who spoke on how to register for skilled options, and the National Sales Manager, FCMB, Mr. Friday Nwokolo.
The high point of the event was when the Sales Manager made two students who asked questions during the guest speaker’s lecture, brand ambassadors of FCMB in LASU, and immediately credited their newly opened FCMB account with twenty thousand naira (#20,000) each
Some of the facilitators who were to train the students in various skills were available at the orientation programme to enlighten them on the various vocational skills available.
