Japan Announces JSPS International Fellowships for FY 2026

Researchers from around the world have a new opportunity to pursue fully funded research in Japan, as the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) officially opens applications for its FY 2026 International Fellowship Programs.

These prestigious fellowships are open to postdoctoral researchers, experienced academics, and PhD candidates seeking to carry out collaborative research at Japan’s top universities and research institutions across natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

About the JSPS International Fellowships

The JSPS Fellowships are designed to promote international academic exchange by inviting outstanding researchers to Japan for collaborative projects with Japanese hosts. The program supports scientific advancement through cross-border partnerships and contributes to the internationalization of Japanese research.

Fellowship Categories and Eligibility

There are four fellowship types available in the FY 2026 call, each catering to different career stages and academic goals:

Funding and Benefits

All selected fellows will receive full financial support during their stay in Japan. The fellowship covers:

• Roundtrip international airfare

• Monthly stipend:

  • ¥362,000 for Postdoctoral Fellows

  • ¥387,600 for Long-Term Invited Fellows

  • ¥18,000 per day for Short-Term Invited Fellows

• Settling-in allowance: ¥200,000

• Research support grant (up to ¥150,000 for eligible applicants)

• Overseas travel insurance

Who Is Eligible?

For Postdoctoral Fellowships [P/PE]:

• Must have a PhD, or plan to obtain one before the fellowship begins.

• PhD should be earned on or after April 2, 2020.

• Must be a citizen of a country with diplomatic ties to Japan.

• Applicants with Japanese citizenship or permanent residency in Japan are not eligible.

For Invitational Fellowships [L/S]:

• Applicants must hold a full-time academic position equivalent to professor or associate professor.

• Must be affiliated with a foreign academic or research institution.

• Should have a substantial research track record.
