How to Switch from University to Polytechnic on JAMB Portal
Sometimes, after gaining admission into a university, students realize that polytechnic education better suits their career goals or learning style. Switching from a university to a polytechnic is possible, but it requires following specific procedures on the JAMB portal to make the transfer official and smooth.
If you want to move from a university program to a polytechnic without losing your admission or registration status, this article will guide you through each step clearly.
Why Switch from University to Polytechnic?
Many factors motivate students to switch from university to polytechnic, such as:
- A preference for more practical, hands-on learning methods
- Interest in specialized technical courses offered primarily at polytechnics
- Lower tuition fees or more manageable academic loads
- Better job prospects in certain technical industries
- Dissatisfaction with university programs or environment
Regardless of your reason, switching properly ensures you avoid complications later on.
Confirm Eligibility for Transfer
Before starting the switch process, confirm that you are eligible:
- You must have a current admission into a recognized university via JAMB.
- The polytechnic you want to transfer to must offer the course you wish to study.
- Your JAMB admission status should be clear, and you must not have fully matriculated or completed significant time at the university.
- Some polytechnics have specific requirements for transfer students, including JAMB cut-off marks or direct entry criteria.
Checking these details with the polytechnic’s admission office or website helps avoid surprises.
Log in to Your JAMB Profile
To begin the switch process, visit the official JAMB e-Facility portal at https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng.
Log in with your registered email and password.
Access the Change of Institution or Course Option
Once logged in, locate and select the “Change of Institution/Faculty/Course” option. This service allows you to update your admission details, including switching from university to polytechnic.
Fill the Change of Institution Form
On the form, provide:
- Your current admission details (university and course)
- The new polytechnic and course you want to transfer to
- Your JAMB registration number and other personal information
Make sure to input everything accurately to avoid delays or rejection.
Make Payment for the Change
Changing institution or course on JAMB portal requires payment. The fee varies but typically ranges from ₦2,500 to ₦5,000. Use the payment options provided on the portal, such as bank payments or online cards.
Submit Your Application
After payment, submit the change form. You will receive a confirmation message or receipt.
Wait for Processing and Confirmation
JAMB and the receiving polytechnic will verify your application. If approved, your admission status on JAMB CAPS will update to reflect the new polytechnic and course. Keep checking CAPS regularly for the update.
Notify Both Institutions
It’s important to inform both your current university and the polytechnic you are transferring to about your decision. Some schools require formal withdrawal letters or transfer forms. Ensure you handle these administrative steps to avoid registration issues.
Register at the Polytechnic
Once your switch is confirmed on JAMB CAPS, proceed to register for your new course at the polytechnicFollow their registration procedures, including payment of acceptance fees and document submission.
Things to Keep in Mind
Switching from university to polytechnic may affect your academic timeline.
Some polytechnics may require you to start from the beginning (ND 1), while others might accept transfer credits.
Plan accordingly to avoid unexpected delays in graduation.
