How to Apply for Admission to Nigerian Universities
How to Apply for Admission to Nigerian Universities
Applying to a Nigerian university can be an exciting yet overwhelming process for many students. Knowing what to do at each step will make the process smoother and increase your chances of success. Here, we’ll break down the steps involved in applying to Nigerian universities, covering everything from choosing your preferred institution to completing the admission process.
1. Choose a University and Course
The first step in applying to any university in Nigeria is to decide on the institution and course you want to pursue. Factors to consider include:
- Accreditation: Ensure the course is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
- Location: Think about whether you prefer studying close to home or in another state.
- Tuition Fees: Confirm the fees and determine whether they fit your budget.
- Cut-off Marks and Requirements: Check the cut-off marks for your desired course and university.
Popular universities in Nigeria include:
- University of Lagos (UNILAG)
- University of Ibadan (UI)
- Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
- Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)
- Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA)
Each university has its own strengths and offerings, so research carefully before making a choice.
2. Sit for the UTME
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). This is a critical step in gaining admission to Nigerian universities.
How to Register for the UTME:
- Create a JAMB Profile: Visit the JAMB e-facility website to create a profile. You will need your email address and phone number.
- Obtain a JAMB ePIN: Purchase the ePIN for the UTME registration. This can be done at designated banks, mobile money outlets, or online platforms.
- Visit an Accredited CBT Centre: Complete your registration at a JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) center. You’ll provide your biometric data and upload your passport photograph.
- Select Your Choices: During registration, you’ll select your preferred universities and courses. Most candidates choose two universities and a polytechnic or college of education as backups.
The UTME tests candidates in four subjects, typically including English Language and three others relevant to your chosen course.
Preparing for the UTME:
- Use the official JAMB syllabus to guide your study.
- Practice with past questions and mock exams.
- Enroll in tutorial classes if necessary.
3. Meet the Cut-off Mark
After the UTME, JAMB releases results, usually within a week. Each university sets a minimum score (cut-off mark) for various courses.
- General Cut-off Marks: For many universities, the minimum is around 160–200, but some courses like Medicine, Law, and Engineering may require higher scores.
- Post-UTME Screening: Some universities conduct additional screening or tests after the UTME.

4. Participate in Post-UTME or Screening
Many universities organize a Post-UTME screening to further assess candidates. This can either be an exam or a document verification process.
Post-UTME Exam:
- Prepare for it like the UTME. Questions are often drawn from similar topics.
- Be aware of the format, which varies between institutions.
Screening Without Exam:
- Submit necessary documents, such as O’level results (WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB), JAMB result slip, and birth certificate.
- Ensure all documents are accurate to avoid disqualification.
5. Upload O’level Results
JAMB requires candidates to upload their O’level results on the JAMB portal. This is crucial as failure to upload correct results can lead to disqualification.
How to Upload O’level Results:
- Log in to your JAMB profile.
- Navigate to the results upload section.
- Upload your WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB result.
You can also visit an accredited CBT center to assist with this process.
6. Monitor Admission Lists
After the screening, universities release their admission lists. These are typically published on:
- The university’s website or portal
- JAMB’s Central Admission Processing System (CAPS)
How to Check on JAMB CAPS:
- Log in to your JAMB profile.
- Select “Check Admission Status.”
- Accept or reject the admission offer.
If you are offered admission and accept it, proceed to the next steps. If rejected, you may need to consider supplementary admission options.
7. Pay Acceptance Fees
Once admitted, universities require newly admitted students to pay an acceptance fee. This confirms that you have accepted the offer. Payment is usually done online through the university portal.

- Submitting original documents for verification.
- Providing passport-sized photographs.
- Paying tuition and other fees.
Ensure you keep copies of all receipts and documents as they may be required in the future.
9. Attend Orientation
Universities organize orientation programs for new students. During this program, you’ll learn about:
- Campus facilities and resources
- Rules and regulations
- Academic expectations
This is also an opportunity to meet fellow students and settle into university life.
10. Other Tips for a Smooth Admission Process
- Stay Updated: Keep checking the university and JAMB websites for updates.
- Follow Instructions: Pay close attention to deadlines and requirements.
- Ask Questions: If unsure about any step, contact the university or JAMB support for clarification.
