FG Urged to Train Graduates in Security: University VC Proposes NYSC Reform

The Vice Chancellor of Wesley University, Ondo Town, Ondo State, Prof. Samuel Obeka, has urged the Federal Government to decentralise the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme to provide graduate youths with security training.
Prof. Obeka, who also serves as a clergyman in the Methodist Church of Nigeria, expressed concern over rising insecurity across the country. Speaking at a press briefing on the university campus ahead of the institution’s convocation ceremony, he emphasized the need for Nigerians to be equipped and licensed to defend themselves.
He proposed that the one-year NYSC program could include security training, teaching graduates how to handle weapons responsibly for self-defense.
“Every citizen today is worried that human life is not being adequately protected. It seems the lives of animals are valued more than those of humans,” Obeka said. “The nation is experiencing a traumatic period that requires urgent intervention. Freedom of movement, once taken for granted, is now a major concern, with insurgency groups freely attacking innocent citizens.”
Obeka further recommended a two-tier security training program: one immediately after secondary school and another after completing a degree, enabling every Nigerian, especially in academia, to be licensed to handle weapons. He argued that such measures could reduce attacks on the roads and improve overall public safety.
Wesley University’s Security Initiatives
The VC highlighted Wesley University’s commitment to the safety of staff and students. The campus features multiple security measures, including a dual-fenced hostel system, strategically positioned security posts, and a Central Security Administration unit.
Unique among Nigerian universities, Wesley employs guardian counsellors with security responsibilities in hostels and runs a boys’ brigade to maintain constant vigilance.
Academic Growth and Inclusive Education
Prof. Obeka also outlined recent academic developments at Wesley University. Under his leadership, all inherited programs have achieved full accreditation, and 27 new academic programs have been added to the original 23.
The College of Medical and Allied Health Sciences and the Law faculty have received full accreditation. Wesley University is the only institution in Nigeria offering a complete PhD program in Theology and provides full academic opportunities for deaf students, including hostel facilities and sign language interpreters.
Infrastructure Upgrades
The university has invested heavily in infrastructure, including refurbished hostels, upgraded medical and academic facilities, and restored campus vehicles, ensuring a conducive learning environment.
Prof. Obeka’s vision combines academic excellence with safety and inclusivity, setting Wesley University apart as a model institution in Nigeria.
