FG Approves TETFund Funding to Upgrade 37 Polytechnics with Modern Engineering and Renewable Energy Equipment

The Federal Government has announced plans to equip 37 polytechnics across Nigeria with modern, industry-grade tools under the second phase of its Skills-G Programme, a strategic intervention aimed at strengthening technical education and addressing the country’s widening skills gap.
The disclosure was made by the Federal Ministry of Education, which confirmed the inauguration of a ministerial implementation and monitoring committee to supervise the upgrade of engineering workshops and laboratory facilities in beneficiary institutions nationwide.
According to the ministry, priority areas for the equipment upgrade include mechatronics, robotics, renewable energy technology, telecommunications, electronics, and automobile engineering. These disciplines were selected to ensure that graduates acquire market-ready technical skills aligned with current labour market demands in Nigeria’s manufacturing, automotive, ICT, and renewable energy sectors.
The committee overseeing the rollout is chaired by the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education. It has been mandated to monitor project execution, ensure transparency and accountability, and recommend additional institutions for inclusion in the third phase scheduled for 2026.
The government reaffirmed that the intervention is being supported by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, underscoring its commitment to delivering globally competitive, industry-relevant technical education. Officials stated that upgrading polytechnic laboratories and engineering workshops will significantly improve hands-on training capacity and reduce the mismatch between graduate competencies and industry requirements.
The Skills-G Programme is a long-standing federal initiative focused on modernising science, engineering, and technical equipment in tertiary institutions, particularly polytechnics. By strengthening infrastructure and expanding access to advanced training tools, the programme seeks to produce technically skilled graduates capable of driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and industrial development.
This intervention also complements the Technical and Vocational Education and Training reform agenda introduced in October 2025, which prioritises skills-based education and aims to transform young Nigerians into job creators rather than job seekers. Education stakeholders believe the coordinated investment in polytechnic infrastructure will enhance Nigeria’s human capital development index and support sustainable economic growth.
With increasing demand for skilled technicians in sectors such as renewable energy installation, automation systems, automotive diagnostics, and telecommunications engineering, the latest upgrade is expected to position polytechnic graduates for high-income technical careers while strengthening Nigeria’s competitiveness in emerging industries.
Policy analysts note that sustained funding, strong regulatory oversight, and industry collaboration will be critical to maximising the impact of the programme and ensuring that Nigerian polytechnics remain responsive to evolving global technology standards.
