College hosts 1st Quarter of SIWES zonal meeting
The Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze on Tuesday, 31st March, played host to the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) first Quarter Zonal meeting that involved Directors/Coordinators of SIWES and Organized Private Sector (OPS).
Declaring the meeting open, the Provost, Dr Tessy Okoli who was represented by the Deputy Provost, Dr C.C Ugwuogo, applauded the coordinators of SIWES in various higher institutions of learning in the zone and the Area Manager, Industrial Training Fund (ITF), for choosing FCE(T), Umunze as their convening point.
The Provost, noted that SIWES has been a good partner in providing additional exposure and practical experience to students during their period of academic mentorship.
The Provost further stated that the College since inception has been a frontline institution in Nigeria vis-a-vis, production of competent human resources capable of competing with their counterparts globally. She reminded the ITF of the 2019/2020 degree students who are yet to receive their allowances and supervisory allowances for staff who supervised NCE 2019/2020 which are yet to be received.
According to the Provost, “this is an objective I have continued to improve upon since I assumed office. I also want to assure you that we will not relent in producing quality students worthy in character and learning for which reports of good conduct will continue to be received. We are working hard to transform the college to top rank college through infrastructure and personnel development”, she said.
The Provost concluded by commending the ITF for prompt response to the institution’s requests concerning orientations and logbook verifications and the affiliate university (NAU Awka) for all their efforts towards ensuring hitch free SIWES activities and payment of the degree students of the college. Also for the Organized Private Sector (OPS) for providing placement opportunities for the students of the college.
The Area Manager of Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Awka, Mrs Nancy Ekong N, represented by the Head of Training, Franklin Okafor, in her remarks, appreciated the Provost for hosting the first quarter meeting of the zone.
Speaking further, the Area Manager reiterated the importance of the training as a critical tool in transferring knowledge to the students and stressed the need for the quarterly meeting with coordinators as key to the smooth running of the programme.
At the second quarterly meeting of the zone, Ekong reminded the gathering that SIWES carries a critical credit unit that is important to the students, and charged the coordinators on the need for supervision.
On his part, the College’s SIWES Coordinator, Dr. TAK Nzeribe thanked the Provost for supporting and promoting the ideals of SIWES among staff and students of the College, adding that they would not rest on their oars until the College attains a world class status known for producing solution providers rather than job seekers.
