Everything You Need to know About Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin (Kwarapoly)

A BRIEF HISTORY.

The Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin was established by his Excellency, the then Military Governor of Kwara State, Col. David Bamigboye. The decision to establish the polytechnic was announced during the launching of the four-year development plan in 1971.

The Polytechnic was established as a body “to provide for studies, training, research, and development of techniques in arts and language, applied sciences, engineering, management and commerce, education, and in other spheres of learning.”

The Kwara State Polytechnic formally commenced operation in January 1973 with an administrative machinery patterned closely after the existing universities in the country.

THE POLYTECHNIC COMMUNITY.

The Polytechnic is hosted in Ilorin, the capital city of Kwara state. The polytechnic community is dominated mostly by Muslims and a few Christians. Ilorin is a peaceful city with low crime rates. Although sometimes there are reports of insecurity, as at the time of gathering this report, the polytechnic community is peaceful and both academic and non-academic activities are going smoothly in the community. About 40% of the people in Ilorin are students at Kwara Poly, while the other 60% are indigenes and people who came for business.

The most common types of businesses in Kwara Poly are commercial businesses; food; boutiques; POS businesses; drinks and beverages; eateries; charging spots; car washes; cyber cafes, etc. If you intend to study at Kwara State Polytechnic and are thinking of what business to do to make profits in the polytechnic community, you can try any of these businesses

THE POLYTECHNIC.

Kwara State Polytechnic, as stated earlier, was established in the year 1971. Kwara Poly has two campuses; the main campus and the mini-campus. The main campus is located at Eleko along the new general hospital road, Ilorin.

The Mini campus is located behind the old general hospital sawmill in Ilorin, Kwara state. The main campus is occupied by all categories of students, including full-time and part-time, while the mini campus is occupied by students in the faculty/Institute of Technology (IOT), which comprises of six departments: Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Mineral Engineering Technology. Both campuses belong to Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin.

The popular buildings in Kwara State Polytechnic that students get most used to are IBAS and IOT. IBAS is at the main campus, behind the Rector’s office, facing the road that links to the tourism center, which consists of several lecture rooms.

The polytechnic also has dress codes for all departments. All forms of indecent dressing are not tolerated, and defaulters’ risk being sanctioned by the school authorities. The school also has a zero-tolerance policy for cultism and examination malpractices.

KWARA POLY PROGRAMMES.

Kwara State Polytechnic runs mainly three (3) programmes, which are the full-time, part-time and IJMB programmes.

1. FULL-TIME PROGRAMME: The full-time programme lasts two years and four semesters. This programme is for students who sat for JAMB, passed and met the minimum cut-off mark. Candidates who pass the school’s internal screening will be offered admission into the full-time programme. Lectures start from 8am to 4pm for full-time students Monday to Friday, and sometimes lecturers fix lectures for 7am. The full-time program is stressful, and the school fees are cheap compared to a part-time program.

2. PART-TIME PROGRAMME: The  part-time program is a direct entry program; that is, with or without a jamb, you can gain admission to Kwanapoly. The duration for this programme is 2 years of six (6) semesters. This program is cheap in terms of admission but expensive in terms of school fees and registration fees. The school doesn’t conduct entrance examinations for part-time programmes. Provided you have attained a minimum of 5 credits in English language and mathematics at O’level, plus another 3 subjects related to your field, you will be considered for admission into Kwara Polytechnic’s part-time programme.

The major challenge of this program is that it is expensive, but if you can afford it, then you are welcome to Kwara State Polytechnic. Lectures are on weekdays, that is, Monday-Saturday, just like a daily part-time programme.

In addition, both full-time and part-time are two-year programmes, and the major difference is class allocation, school fees, and duration. School fees for part-time are expensive, while those for full-time are cheaper. Sometimes when full-time students are on break, part-time students will be in their 3rd semester, which implies that the academic calendar for full-time and part-time students is different. Both full-time and part-time students will be issued the same certificate.

3. IJMB PROGRAMME: This is a programme for O’level holders that want to secure admission into 200-level to Nigerian universities. The duration of this programme is 2 years.
