Dangote Cement to Launch Block-Makers Academy at Kano Poly Amid Rising Building Collapse Concerns

In a bold move aimed at tackling Nigeria’s growing challenge of building collapses, Africa’s largest cement manufacturer, Dangote Cement Plc, has unveiled plans to establish a Block-Makers Academy at Kano State Polytechnic (KSP).
This development was revealed by the company’s Head of Technical Sales, Mr. Aniki Ayodeji, during a strategic advocacy visit to the institution. According to Mr. Ayodeji, the academy will serve as a training ground for block makers and artisans, equipping them with essential skills and tools to produce high-quality bricks that meet industry standards.
“Our goal is to bridge the knowledge and skill gap in the building industry,” Ayodeji stated. “By empowering artisans with the right training and materials, we can raise the standard of construction and drastically reduce incidents of structural failures across the country.”
Beyond skills training, Dangote Cement also intends to provide modern tools and technical support to enhance artisans’ efficiency and output. The company believes this initiative will not only improve construction quality but also contribute meaningfully to reducing the national housing deficit.
Welcoming the proposal, Dr. Muhammad Umar Kibiya, the Acting Rector of Kano State Polytechnic, commended Dangote Cement for its proactive approach in addressing critical infrastructure issues.
“This partnership is timely and aligns with our core mission of advancing technical education in Nigeria,” Dr. Kibiya said. “We are fully committed to supporting the success of this academy, which will play a vital role in improving building safety and enhancing artisan competence nationwide.”
After the meeting, the visiting team, led by Dr. Zulaihat Gidado, Coordinator of the Central Laboratories and Workshops Coordination Unit, proceeded to inspect the proposed site for the academy located at the School of Management Studies.
This planned academy marks a groundbreaking step in the fight against substandard construction practices, signaling a promising collaboration between industry and academia to safeguard lives and infrastructure across Nigeria.
