The Academic Staff union of polytechnic (ASUP), Has again warn government of the federal republic of Nigeria to implement the Memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreement signed in 2021 to avert strike action.
POLYTV understands that the Union demands are yet to be implemented 10 months after Suspending strike action in 2021.
The union further warn that they might go on indefinite strike Nationwide starting from Thursday 5th May 2022 should the federal government refused to implement their demands as the one month ultimatum earlier issued last month expires May 4th.
Some of the demands of the polytechnic lecturers are; Non release of the approved N15Bn revitalization fund for the sector, Non release of 10months arrears of the new minimum wage 2 years after the expiration of the President’s directive and nearly 3 years after it implementation, Non release of the reviewed normative instruments for institution/management and programs accreditation, Continual infractions in the implementation of the provisions of the Federal Polytechnics Act as amended in 2019, Delay in the appointment of rectors and Non release of the scheme of service for Polytechnics: Since 2017.
Meanwhile the Minister of State For Education Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba said that, government has reached agreement with ASUP a statement which ASUP claimed to be Untrue.
However, the polytechnic lecturers is set to hold their NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL(NEC) meeting next week to finalize their decision whether or not to go on strike.
ASUP president, Comrade Ezeibe said;
“We gave a one-month ultimatum with effect from April 4th. The ultimatum will run out on May 4th and thereafter, our NEC will be convened for a decision.
“The government has to sit up and accord the right priorities to education. It is not just coincidence that all the unions in the tertiary education sector are agitated at the same time.”
ASUP NEC meeting Will hold next week and this would determine the fate of polytechnic students in the country.
