The University of Pretoria (UP), in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, is inviting applications from young, academically gifted Africans for fully funded undergraduate and postgraduate (Honours and Master’s) scholarships. This initiative is designed to empower talented students who demonstrate strong leadership potential but face financial and social barriers to accessing higher education.
About the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program was first launched at UP in January 2014. Since then, it has provided life-changing opportunities for hundreds of students across Africa to pursue quality education. With the start of Phase 2 in January 2024, the program has broadened its focus to include not only academically gifted youth, but also refugees, displaced persons, and individuals living with disabilities.
This initiative is about more than scholarships—it’s about nurturing the next generation of African leaders. The program equips scholars with not just academic skills, but also values, leadership qualities, and entrepreneurial mindsets to drive social and economic transformation across the continent.
Vision of the Program
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is committed to building a vibrant network of young African leaders who will give back to their communities. Scholars are expected to make meaningful contributions through leadership, innovation, community service, and entrepreneurship.
Graduates are further supported as they transition into employment, launch entrepreneurial ventures, or continue their studies. The long-term goal is to create a movement of changemakers shaping Africa’s future.
What the Scholarship Covers
The program offers comprehensive financial and academic support, including:
- Full tuition fees
- Accommodation and living expenses

- Travel costs (where applicable)

Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a citizen of an African country
- Have applied to and received admission to an eligible undergraduate, Honours, or Master’s program at the University of Pretoria
- Demonstrate strong academic performance
- Show evidence of leadership potential and commitment to community service
- Face clear financial or social barriers to education
Priority is given to young people from marginalized communities, including those living with disabilities, refugees, and displaced persons.
Application Process
Step 1: Apply for admission to your chosen program of study at the University of Pretoria.
Step 2: Download and complete the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application form from the University of Pretoria’s official website.
Step 3: Submit the completed scholarship application form and all supporting documents electronically to mcfsp@up.ac.za. Required documents include:
- Completed application form
- Proof of application/admission to UP
- Certified academic transcripts
- A motivation letter or personal statement
- Reference letters (if required)
Step 4: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview as part of the final selection stage.
Application Deadlines
- Undergraduate applicants: 31 August 2025
- Master’s applicants: 30 September 2025
Applicants are encouraged to apply early to allow sufficient time for processing and consideration.
