ASUP to Embark on Nationwide Strike Over Polytechnic Downgrade

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) announced on Friday that it would initiate industrial action unless the government halts the implementation of the new Scheme of Service for Nigerian Polytechnics, which became effective on June 7.
The Auchi Polytechnic chapter of ASUP made this declaration following an emergency congress held in Auchi. Chairman Bamidele Osamudiamen voiced strong opposition, labeling the new scheme as detrimental to the advancement of polytechnic education.
“We will commence with protests against the new scheme starting Monday, followed by a strike,” Osamudiamen stated to reporters. He emphasized that the scheme worsens the career progression prospects for lecturers within the polytechnic system, potentially undermining recent sectoral gains.
Osamudiamen criticized the scheme for perpetuating disparities between holders of Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) and university degrees, foreseeing it as a catalyst for sectoral unrest due to its unfair career progression guidelines.
Echoing these sentiments, Polytechnic Rector Dr. Salisu Umar supported the lecturers’ stance against the scheme, citing concerns that it would stifle polytechnic education in Nigeria and advocating for its immediate suspension.
“In essence, the new scheme is flawed and riddled with irregularities, warranting its dismissal,” Umar asserted.
