Why NBTE HND to BSC Conversion Programme is not a Welcome Development for Polytechnic Students
The National Board for Technical Education has introduced a one year HND to Bsc conversion programme for all HND holders. This program according to the board is to facilitate HND holders for higher degrees.
While we commend the board for this latest development, we also use this medium to call on the board to pressure president Tinubu to sign the Bill ending the dichotomy between HND and Bsc certificate.
Polytechnic students can’t continue to be the source of revenue generation for the federal government in which we all know this has been the reason why the discrimination still exists today.
Despite the fact the bill ending HND and Bsc dichotomy has been passed in the senate and it is yet to be passed into Law, why? Because most schools are making lots of money through it.
This latest development from NBTE will rubbish the struggle of our polytechnic lecturers (ASUP) who have been agitating for an end to the discrimination between HND and Bsc certificate over the years.
NBTE is a board regulating polytechnic education in Nigeria, the executive officers represent our voice but they choose to support the corrupt system because of revenue generation or should I say their pocket.
If NBTE should support HND to Bsc conversion then what is the hope for polytechnic education in Nigeria? What are the hopes of polytechnic students and graduates of polytechnic? Of course the labor market will always place Bsc above HND.
Well, thanks to the board for introducing the program, at least it will help our graduates to upgrade for higher degrees but still I think this development is bad news for polytechnic students seeing the board that ought to voice out for us now supporting the system. For those who still believe HND is equal to Bsc, I believe your eyes are clear now.
