The Algalita Marine Research and Education Student Mini Grant Program is offering $500 grants to young change-makers aged 11–25 who are leading projects addressing plastic pollution at its roots. This initiative empowers students to implement innovative, community-based solutions while receiving mentorship and guidance from environmental experts.
The program will select ten students for the 2025–2026 cycle, supporting their projects with financial assistance, structured learning modules, and advisor support to ensure meaningful impact.
Program Purpose
The Student Mini Grant Program is designed to:
- Equip students with a deep understanding of the root causes of plastic pollution
- Encourage community-based environmental action
- Support youth-led leadership in sustainability, social justice, and environmental transformation
- Build long-term capacity for impactful, eco-friendly initiatives
Eligible Projects
The program welcomes a wide range of projects, including:
- Zero-waste initiatives and circular economy systems
- Environmental justice campaigns and advocacy programs
- Creative reuse projects such as repair cafés and Fix-It Clinics
- Educational workshops, peer outreach, and awareness campaigns
- Composting and school garden programs reducing plastic use
- Innovative STEM or art-based solutions to plastic pollution
Who Can Apply
Eligible participants must:
- Be aged 11–25 years
- Hold an individual Wayfinder Society account
- Complete required actions: watch The Story of Plastic film and complete the System Mapping module
- Identify a non-family adult advisor (teacher, mentor, or facilitator)
- Submit applications in English
Grant Details
- Each selected student receives $500
- Ten students will be chosen for the 2025–2026 cycle
- Funds must be used within one year, with documented expenditures
How to Apply
- Sign up for a Wayfinder Society account
- Complete the required learning modules
- Develop a project proposal addressing the root causes of plastic pollution
- Secure a non-family adult advisor
- Submit your application including: motivation, prior experience, project plan, and budget
- Participate in interviews if shortlisted
- Attend mandatory video calls with the program team alongside your advisor
- Receive funding, implement your project, and submit progress reports within a year
Selection Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on:
- Clear understanding of plastic pollution systems
- Demonstrated commitment to environmental or social justice
- Feasibility and innovation of the project plan
- Community relevance and potential long-term impact
- Connection to the applicant’s personal story and previous actions
