117 Northern Nigerian Students Depart for Algeria on Fully Funded Medicine and Engineering Scholarships

A total of 117 students from Northern Nigeria have officially departed for Algeria to study under a fully funded international scholarship programme facilitated by the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation.

The scholarship, which covers tuition, accommodation, feeding, healthcare, and other essential needs, was established through a partnership between the Darika Tijjaniyya Islamic Sect and the Algerian Government to promote education, cultural exchange, and human capital development among young Nigerians.

Foundation Secures 140 Slots, 117 Meet Final Requirements

Speaking during the official send-forth and orientation ceremony held in Bauchi, the Chairman of the Foundation, Sayyadi Aliyu, confirmed that although 140 students were initially shortlisted for the programme, only 117 candidates met the full admission and documentation requirements.

He added that the remaining students who are still finalizing their requirements will join the next batch soon.

Aliyu noted that Bauchi State, being the home base of the foundation, produced the highest number of selected students, followed by other beneficiaries from Gombe, Taraba, Yobe, and other northern states.

Scholarship Focused on Medicine, Engineering, and ICT Fields

The foundation revealed that 50 of the awarded scholarships are dedicated to Medicine, while the remaining slots are distributed across other critical fields such as Engineering, Computer Science, Islamic Studies, and related disciplines.

This diversification aims to produce well-rounded graduates capable of contributing to Nigeria’s medical, technological, and academic development upon their return.

According to Aliyu, “The scholarship is a long-term investment in human development. Our goal is to give young Nigerians, especially from the northern region, a chance to acquire world-class education in critical sectors.”

Students Urged to Uphold Discipline and Represent Nigeria Positively

While addressing the beneficiaries, Aliyu advised them to remain disciplined, focused, and law-abiding throughout their academic journey in Algeria. He emphasized that their conduct abroad would reflect on the image of Nigeria and the Tijjaniyya Islamic community.

“You must be good ambassadors of Nigeria and those who facilitated this rare opportunity. You have been given the best platform to build your future — use it wisely,” he stated.

He added that the foundation had already arranged introductory training in Arabic and French to help students adapt quickly to Algeria’s academic and social environment.

Islamic Values and Academic Excellence Emphasized

Aliyu further highlighted that the initiative aligns with Islamic teachings that emphasize the importance of knowledge acquisition.

“Islam is a religion of knowledge, and whoever neglects it goes against its teachings. The purpose of this scholarship is not only to build professionals but to produce scholars who will contribute positively to humanity,” he said.

He also urged the beneficiaries to remain united, avoid distractions, and remember that their success abroad would pave the way for more Nigerians to benefit from similar opportunities in the future.

Emir of Bauchi Advises Students to Protect Nigeria’s Image

The Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Sulaimanu Adamu, who also addressed the students, advised them to conduct themselves with dignity and avoid any behavior that could tarnish the country’s reputation.

He expressed concern about negative reports involving Nigerians in some foreign countries, warning that such actions could discourage international partners from offering more scholarship opportunities.

“The Nigerian flag has, in many instances, been blackened abroad contrary to its true green-white-green identity. You must uphold this symbol with pride, discipline, and respect,” the Emir stated.

He also reminded them that the green color on the Nigerian flag is a symbol associated with peace, prosperity, and the house of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), encouraging them to live up to its meaning.

Strengthening Bilateral and Educational Ties Between Nigeria and Algeria

The scholarship programme has been described as a major step toward strengthening Nigeria–Algeria educational and diplomatic relations.

It also reflects a broader effort by the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation to promote access to quality education for underprivileged youths in Northern Nigeria.

By focusing on Medicine, Engineering, Computer Science, and Islamic Studies, the initiative not only equips beneficiaries with technical skills but also instills moral values that align with global academic ethics.

Observers believe this collaboration will produce future leaders and professionals who can return to Nigeria to contribute to the healthcare system, technology sector, and education reform.

A Vision for the Future

The Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the scholarship programme to more students in the coming years. Plans are underway to secure additional partnerships with other countries and organizations interested in supporting Nigeria’s educational growth.

The Foundation’s chairman noted that the long-term goal is to ensure that young Nigerians, regardless of financial background, can pursue advanced education in key developmental fields without being hindered by economic challenges.

The departure of these 117 students to Algeria marks another milestone in promoting international education and human development in Northern Nigeria.

With full funding, language training, and strong moral guidance, the scholars are set to represent Nigeria positively and bring back valuable knowledge to drive national progress in medicine, technology, and leadership.

As the Emir of Bauchi aptly stated, “This opportunity is not just for you as individuals — it is for Nigeria. Carry the flag high, and let the world see the strength, intelligence, and dignity of Nigerian youth.”
